This is by far the best Rolling Stones tribute ever... i'll quote two of the most popular 'covers' blog Cover Lay Down here: "...chock full of slide guitars, harmonica, and brushed drumhead beats, its reinterpretations updated sparingly if at all with modern indiepop and country rock sensibilities. Each track is a gem, each transition another revelation: everything fits, and everything works. Its like listening to your favorite late-night radio station when the DJ is in the perfect groove"

...and this one from Cover Me "Given the broad sonic reach of the "alt-country" genre, one might expect that Paint It Black: An Alt Country Tribute to the Rolling Stones to be a fully plugged in, loud, proud and boisterous salute capturing all the sweat, swagger and energy of the group. But that would require leaning on the Mick Jagger side of the sound. Instead, producer Jim Sampas has chosen to throttle-down, and to lead with Keith (with the Grievous Angel as guardian). It results in an exceptionally cohesive and even-keeled album - a rarity among tribute compilations."

and of course we can't forget quote from the most popular Alt Country music magazine No Depression: "excellent choices made by the participants. Although a handful of better known tracks are included ("Wild Horses," "Paint It Black," "Jumpin' Jack Flash"), it's quite the stroke of genius to emphasize more obscure entries like "Streets of Love," "Before They Make Me Run" and "Coming Down Again," all of which seem open to rediscovery. Likewise, the Stones' flirtation with Americana, transposed via songs such as "Moonlight Mile," "Sweet Virginia," "Wild Horses" and "Faraway Eyes" find an ideal connection with the downcast delivery so prevalent here. An excellent compendium, this is one tribute that's absolutely essential."

Some standouts that are well done, but for the most part there aren't many genuine "alt country" groups contributing to this album. I bought this because the track line up is a literal "best of" collection for my favorite Stone's tracks, but aside from Sweet Virginia, Dear Doctor, You Got the Silver, Coming Down Again, and a few others, there isn't much of that genuine country blues groove or feel. My favorite Stones song of all time, Torn and Frayed, sounds painfully awkward and robotic, completely missing that fantastic loose vibe and rich fullness of the original. Streets of Love made me wonder if I should have had a Care Bears backpack and Glow sticks with me before heading into the Rave that the covering artist plays. Loving Cup sounds like it tried to be some sort of mix between the Exile version and the classic "Drunk Version" outtake from the Let It Bleed sessions, but without any semblance of blues or country to be found anywhere.

I appreciate the attempt to put a different spin on these timeless gems, but the name of the album is a bit misleading. This album is long on Alt, short on Country, and devoid of the blues influence lurking behind all good country music entirely. The Deadstring Brothers, arguably the best Country Blues "Stones Influenced" group since the Black Crowes, are nowhere to be found on this album, which was sorely disappointing.

Worth a shot, but don't get too excited.

The songs I least expected to work actually work the best. Not every song is great, but some certainly are. I'm not particularly a country music fan either, so I'm not that easy to impress with country renditions of rock music hits.

a great re-listening to classic stones tunes - hearing them with new ears, new versions of old tunes. Excellent tributes.

It is so interesting to hear how other artists cover a song that you really enjoy. I think these musicians were truly creative, and I'm getting great enjoyment from listening.
