More About the Author

Hi! My name is Philana Marie Boles and I am the author of four novels: Glitz (a YA), Little Divas (for 'tweens), and two for adults (In the Paint and Blame It on Eve).

I'm so excited because I have a few more books on the way, too! :) I will share details as soon as I can, I promise.

I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and it all started because I absolutely loved for my parents to read to me as a child. From there, I wanted to write. I started with poetry in the first grade and even began my first story as a second grader.

One day, I told my parents that I wanted to write my own novel someday and showed them that notebook. Their matter-of-fact reply was "just finish it".

That feeling of "why not" made all of the difference in my life.

In high school, my mentors--John Rowley and Chrissy Rode--encouraged me as well. Looking back on it all, I can see how much of an impact that had on me. "Who is anyone to tell you that you can't?" was my teacher's reply when I said I hoped to be a professional writer. Mrs. Rode was so right.

So after writing and directing a few high-school plays and musicals with Mr. Rowley, I went on to earn a BFA in creative writing and theater from Bowling Green State University.

At BGSU, I studied under Fred Zackel and Richard Messer, amazing writers themselves and incredible professors.

Besides writing books, I have worked as a freelance publicist and media consultant for music artists; for Glamour magazine in the media relations department; at 40 Acres & a Mule Filmworks as a development assistant; as a makeup artist; and as as a substitute teacher (my favorite gig of all time).

When I'm not writing, I volunteer my time as a judge for national scholarship beauty pageants and assisting at competitive dance conventions for my niece, Jada.

In my spare time, I love just about anything having to do with popular culture, but most especially music.

Currently, I live in a suburb of New York City where I am at work at more novels and finishing up my graduate degree in the arts. I love learning just as much as I love producing quality work. And I don't plan to stop doing either anytime soon.

I hope you will enjoy reading Glitz, my newest novel. It is every music fan's on-the-road fantasy come true...

xoxo

4.0 out of 5 stars Spunky and sassy novel, February 11, 2005
By
BookRemarks (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In the Paint: A Novel (Paperback)
In the Paint is about a Detroit woman named Danni Blair whose professional career and romantic relationship are in transition. Danni learns lessons through the people and circumstances of her life which makes for a thoughtful and unique read. Both clever and funny, the novel is written with pizzazz and has an identifiable and likeable voice.

This book is for those who love throwback novels; it's traditional in some ways yet sassy and contemporary in others. The dialogue has attitude to spare which makes for a fun read. Lots of scenes are open to individual interpretation and it's just an all-around satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alley Oop, January 20, 2005
This review is from: In the Paint: A Novel (Paperback)
One of the most breathtaking plays in basketball is the alley oop. A lob pass is thrown from one player to another, the second player catching the pass in the air and slamming it through the basket in one smooth motion. It takes skill, precision, and a synchronous rhythm between the two players. Much like love. In The Paint, Philana Marie Boles's second novel after the exemplary Blame it on Eve, is a sexy, thought-provoking, and intelligently written story of two lovers, mired in the games of love. Danni Blair is an artist in spirit, nontheless with a silenced brush. Her on-again-off-again love, Dallas Laylock, is an NBA superstar, partly, through his romantic shenanigans, responsible for Danni's quieted artistry. This is their story of love, redemption, and awakening. Unlike so many contemporary novels, particularly in the AF-AM realm, Boles takes no short cuts in characterization or story. In The Paint is everything this discriminate reader seeks in a novel. Chock full of developed characters, intriguing situations, competent and compelling dialogue. It was a tremendous pleasure on the journey to finding out if Danni and Dallas would meet with defeat or victory. Boles is one to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Color of Love, January 25, 2006
By
T. Rhythm Knight (Coral Springs, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In the Paint: A Novel (Paperback)
Dani Blair is an artist and the ex-girlfriend of a Detroit Piston basketball player, Dallas Laylock, in Philana Marie Boles', In The Paint. Even though Dallas and Dani have broken up, Dallas still tries to keep Dani while maintaining his player ways. Despite Dallas' advances, Dani does her best to resist him as she buries herself deep in her career--a career that leaves her dissatisfied as a artist. When Dani is laid-off at the art gallery where she works, she is forced to do some soul-searching. Not only must Dani deal with Dallas and her job woes, she finds herself dealing with a strained relationship with her best-friend, Kizzy and her foster mother.

In The Paint is a fun romantic read. The story moves at a steady pace and the characters are well-developed. If you like romance, In The Paint will surely not disappoint.
