5.0 out of 5 stars Get up to Speed
You won't regret this book or the Power book, If found both to be very helpful. This one is more basic, with tons of hands on examples Very easy to learn and really shows you the power of the program including animations, collages, layers, make a puzzle, picture frames and lots more! Fully illustrated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment
I made the mistake of buying this book based on the reviews here. I just want to make banner collages like the ones on the cover of the PSP manual and on the cover of this Visual Insight book. Hundreds of pages later, I'm still searching. But if you want to know how to to use a mosaic effect on an image (and other useless things), this book is for you. Despite the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful..., March 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 6 Visual Insight: Learn the Most Useful Techniques for Everyday Tasks and Then Take It Up a Notch with Some Special Effects (Paperback)
Once I got Paint Shop Pro 6, I was excited but a bit frightened about the complexity of the program. My previous artistic/graphics experience consisited of art class in high school. I didn't know what a mask or a raster layer (or much else) was. Visual Insight explained everything I needed in simple terms with appropriate illustrations. It is a great book for beginners. The projects at the second half of the book helped me to see what this program is capable of. After going through this book, I am now able to create the graphics that I need.

Being somewhat new to the Paint Shop Pro family I now realized that there's life after PhotoShop. This book is wonderful! With each project, the authors takes you through them step-by-step. I also purchased the PSP 6 POWER! by Lori J. Davis. You will not regret purchasing this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A QUITE REMARKABLE PIECE OF WORK, June 14, 2000
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 6 Visual Insight: Learn the Most Useful Techniques for Everyday Tasks and Then Take It Up a Notch with Some Special Effects (Paperback)
As the world's greatest 'Non Artist', any graphical book would have to be extremely good to teach me. This is just such a book.

Assuming very little knowledge of Paint Shop, the first part of the book starts at the very basics by going through each of the available tools contained in PSP.

Using a semi-tutorial / semi-information session approach, you will soon find yourself familiar with everything from drawing lines & typing text through masks, tubes & layers. (You will even learn Animation Shop!)

The second part of the book contains many different projects for you to try. Each project revises & builds on the material taught in the first part of the book. They are quite involved; but easy to follow.

By the end of the book, you will feel an accomplished paint shop pro user ~ without having been pushed too far during the learning experience.

Nothing is perfect, however, & this book has a minor flaw. Both parts of the book rely upon you having to hand a collection of images to work with. While this may at first not seem to be much of a problem, you may find that certain functions within PSP won't work with the exercies due to incorrect colour depth etc. Again, while this is fairly easy to sort, unless you know what's wrong, you may get frustrated.

To solve the problem, it would have been good if the authors could have provided a set of images on a CD-Rom. Perhaps some starting images along with 'answers' to each project.

In summary, an easily readable yet thorough book which everyone from Picasso down to me will benefit from. It's great value as well.

I purchase many boooks and never read them, or I start and never finish. I read this one cover to cover. The examples are great. I was able to make everything demonstrated in this book. I learned all those advanced features I was wanting to learn. When I buy a manual for a computer program this is what I am looking for... I am keeping my eyes open for more books by these two authors... I have ever paint shop pro manual listed with amazon.com

An excellent book to accompany your Paint Shop Pro software. This book gives visual examples which makes it easy to learn Paint Shop Pro without frustration. It shows each step with a dialog box and hints. There are color illustrations in the center of the book to see what a finished graphic will look like. I'm a novice and started doing complicated layers and effects in a few days because of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring & easy to understand, November 20, 2001
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 6 Visual Insight: Learn the Most Useful Techniques for Everyday Tasks and Then Take It Up a Notch with Some Special Effects (Paperback)
Once you get through some of the useful techniques in this book you will find yourself inspired to do more. Although the photos could have been more in depth I found this book to be very helpful, especially when working with layered images. I enjoy making my own custom frames now and often refer to this book from time to time when I want to try something new. It's an excellent learning tool that I am glad I purchased.

The writing style is easy to understand, and the book has a clean, organized look and feel. I'm very glad I purchased it. For me, it has taken away some of the frustration I was having and replaced it with a feeling of accomplishment, not to mention the creative ideas it has inspired me to try. I feel it's an excellent reference source and a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased, June 28, 2010

I am only about half way through the book, but I'm very pleased with it so far. I've had Paint Shop Pro 6 for years and have never been able to realize the full potential of the program. This book has allowed me to do that.

The descriptions are clear and conicide with the version of the program. It has never left me hanging with something that was described that I could not find in the actual program. I never knew how layers and masks worked and now I feel confident that I can use them. I look forward to continuing on with the tutorials. It has been a joy to learn from this book.

Kudos to both the Authors: Romana Pruitt and Joshua Pruitt
