Another great book with step-by-step instructions. Be prepared to learn to airbrush though, because that's how he paints these fish!

I've owned this book for a few years - its a fun and easy read and a decent enough primer on fish carving, but it is badly outdated on both the methods and the artists protrayed in the book (I believe only one of them is still currently selling carvings). The methods are neat, but fall far short of the standards set for detailing a trout in todays fish carving competitions. If you just want to learn some basics or are a beginner, then this is a great starter. If you want to learn more detail on carving and painting, you'll have to look into groups like the National Fish Carvers Guild (thenfcg.com) or check out the DVD's on carving fish from Ed Walicki on [...]. I have applied some of what I learned from these older books - you can review my work at [...] if you are interested.

HOW TO PAINT TROUT BASIC Vol 3, is sparkling. The descriptions, the methods, the photography and colored examples are wonderful if not downright intimidating for this amateur wood carver.

I will learn from this book and so will anyone who is truly interested in carving realism. If you don't carve, you will appreciate the professional artistry of author Curtis J. Badger.

The book was worth the price just to learn how to depict the fine scales of trout and the detailed painting techniques.
