Another amazing album from the Lizards. They have a unique ability to "send-up" country and western cliches. Reminiscing about dear old Grand-pop becomes a ballad about loading his image onto a laser projector and "sitting in the kitchen with Grandpa's hologram." The theme of the beauty of Texas becomes, "That Godforsaken Hell-Hole I Call Home," ("all my friends are buried there and some of them are dead . . .") In a truly bizarre and wonderful twist, they combine the theme of the strong, silent man with the drivel of the men's movement, in "Paint Me On Velvet" ("we stood around in the rain, just a feeling our pain, and learning to grieve.") As usual with the Lizards, an absolute hoot of an album, combined with total mastery of bluegrass and Texas Swing. A gem of an album.

i had the advantage of knowing a little about the type of material that the lounge lizards record and was very pleased with this selection.they provide very good vocals,excellent instrumentals, some humor,and some things to think about all on one disc.the ordering and shipping of the disc went good,and the waiting for its arrival was only made difficult by my eagerness to start listening to it .

A great reminder that we take ourselves a little to seriously. Love it!

The famous, fabulous, fearless and flamboyant ones do some of their best work on this short, but highly entertaining CD. The title track is one of the highlights, as they lampoon the "man of few words" style of Waylon Jennings in a song with a chorus that salutes roadside velvet art "Jesus and Elvis, the dogs playing poker, and Willie and me!" (There's even a Willie Nelson-style guitar bridge.) "Throw the Oak Ridge Boys in the Slammer" introduces us to "music criminals on the loose--like Kenny, Bocephus and LEEEEE GREEEENWOOOOOD" (I think the backstory is that the Lizards had just completed a not-very-well-received show at a prison when they wrote this number). "Going to Hell In Your Heavenly Arms" tells the story of lust at the Baptist Annual Convention. Lust returns later in "Lusters Motel", a send up on any number of infidelity songs. The Lizards' obligatory gospel number is "Jesus Loves Me (But He Can't Stand You)"--turns out Jesus has a 900 number in Tulsa and does pretty well given that English is his second language. "The Three Sinners" is their followup gospel number (God condemns and Satan destroys the houses made of straw and sticks); the brick house "follows God's true plan" and stands as Satan "huffs and puffs". They also adapt another kids' favorite "Flying Purple People Eater"--in their version the monster only wants to "play the banjo in a bluegrass band" and succeeds with an appearance on the Arsenio Hall show. Another of my favorites is "Grandpa's Hologram", which takes on sentimental songs about Grandpa in a story about 1,000 years of interaction with Grandpa's computerized image sitting at the breakfast table. The ending is an extremely clever use of a fadeout. As I look at this site, not enough people are buying the CD's of this fabulously talented and entertaining band. Come on folks, give the Lizards the love they deserve!

This is a very talented group of men and the harmony is the greatest. They sing a great variety of songs, and many are so funny and unlike anything I have ever heard before. The one about the Oak Ridge Boys was so funny and had me laughing out loud. The Paint Me On Velvet is very pretty and very clever. I love the one about Jesus Loves Me , He Cannot Stand You. All in all I have listened to this CD many times and will enjoy it over and over again.
