If you're an experienced Paint Shop Pro user, this might be a good reference book. But as a novice, I found the book to be confusing, just a collection of Paint Shop Pro facts and procedures. It would have been nice to have some examples, where an image is edited from start to finish, step by step. Also, I couldn't help but notice that the authors did not give an address or email address where they could be contacted with questions, comments, errors in the book, etc. I have put this book back on the shelf and I'm using the manual that came with Paint Shop Pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended For The Beginner!, March 15, 1999

This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
Paint Shop Pro has proven to be a valuable asset for the serious Website designer who must quickly create and edit graphic images. This program has evolved into a top-notch product that competes on many levels with the best programs in the industry. Users of all levels of experience will find it easy and affordable to use. Ben Sawyer and Joann Meyer have written Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows to offer a concise overview of the operation of the entire program.

The book offers readers detailed instruction on a number of topics such as setting the program's preferences, creating images, acquiring new images (scanning, digital cameras, clipart collections, and Web services), using the many editing tools included with the program, creating Web images, controlling colors for faster Web delivery, and creating animated Web graphics with Animation Shop that ships with Paint Shop Pro.

Of special interest to others, who like myself enjoy experimenting with creative image editing, the book devotes a considerable amount of time discussing the use of the image filters supplied with the program. Readers are taken on an in-depth step-by-step walk through their use. A color illustrated section provides some amazing special effects anyone can create on their own with very little effort involved!

This Paint Shop Pro reference guide is clearly and concisely organized, making it easy to follow. In fact it is somewhat easier to read through and understand than the original owner's manual. If you are looking for additional assistance with Paint Shop Pro this book is for you. Before spending big bucks on a more advanced graphics program, consider putting Paint Shop Pro and this book to use. Both are highly recommended for the beginner!

4.0 out of 5 stars not for the total beginner, July 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
Good book if you have a bit of hands on with this program. I would not say it is a good book for the total beginner...some of the examples are a bit hard to follow. It is a REFERENCE book not a insparational book. You should have some idea of what you want to do. It is organized in logical sections and subjects were easy to find. Even with the programs manual, this is a good book to have handy. I think it should have been spiral bound to lay flat tho, I hate having to set something on it to keep it flat while I work. The book is not in color but there are center pages that have color examples. Yes I would buy it again if I lost it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Cheat Sheet, April 3, 2000

Well written for what it is. If you're trying to understand graphics concepts - buy another book. It tells you what commands/buttons to click on without explaining why. Severly lacking in discussion of subjects. More like a 300 page cheat sheet!

4.0 out of 5 stars More in-depth than the manual, better at explaining options, April 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
This provides very basic information for new users and then explains what most of the many options do. Once you begin to understand what a process can do, you can use your own imagination to create, tweak or tidy images. There are a few examples, but mostly this book tries to shed light and examine the corners of the PSP 5 program.

This is not a book for someone who has no idea what to do with PSP. It's not filled with creative ideas for you to copy. It's great if you've been using PSP for a while and feel fairly comfortable with the program--you'll learn how to get more out of the software.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T buy this book if you are a beginner!, June 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
Having been a college teacher for over 30 years I would cite this book as the perfect example of how NOT to write a technical guide! Arcane terms are used without any word of explanation. If you want to know how to actually use Paint Shop Pro this book will not even get you off the ground. If you don't find it utterly confusing and mystifying you must already be very familiar with the program. In which case, you would not need this book!

What is REALLY needed is a sort of Paint Shop Pro for Dummies. This book doen't even begin to take that kind of approach. It's difficult to imagine just who would find it at all useful.

This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
If you are tired of lamer beginner books and have no time for the $60 master in-depth reference books then this title is for you. In plain terms and with plenty of photos and examples, it guides you through PSP 5.0's features one by one. Recommended highly, well worth the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginner, not a reference book., March 30, 2000
By
This review is from: Paint Shop Pro 5 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) (Paperback)
I found this book very confusing. It is the worst book I have ever had. I don't know for whom this book was written, who would find it useful? I can give just one star for this book, because at least it has text and pictures. Don't spend your money, you will find user's guide for this program more useful and for free.
