It was extremely helpful,
By Tom Bartomoli (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Paint Your Motorcycle (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
A friend has recommend this book and after using it, I can see why. I liked the way she, the author, told it like it is. There's no sugercoating. It's very hands on, down and dirty advice. She tells you exactly what to expect. I liked the way it was so accurate when it came to the preparation. She really goes into detail. This book made painting my bike project much easier than I thought it would be. In fact it went so well, I'm thinking about doing it again over the winter by painting a friend's bike. I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of painting a motorcycle.

What I have been looking for,
By Steve Mangs "Steve" (Silver Springs, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Paint Your Motorcycle (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
This book covers subjects I have not found anywhere else. No other books or magazine artciles had anything about molding frames or doing bodywork on bike parts. I like the way each chapter is so thorough. The pictures really detail very well the steps you have to go through to get professional results. I also like the chapter on priming and painting any kind of bike part. This gal really covers the bases. This book has become my bible for painting bike stuff. Well worth the money!

When I decided my VROD needed painting I was floored at how much people charged. I decided to try and do it myself so I started shopping for books. This is one of the books I bought.
In general the book is OK for an absolute beginner such as myself. It is obvious the publisher wanted lots of pictures and not a lot of words. Many details of technique were glossed over or simply not inculded, and it is obvious the author is very skilled in these subjects. As is often the case, this is not a book that will answer all your questions or cover all your needs. But I did walk away with one technique that I feel "made" my paint job in the end and that is the concept of using "guide coats". It is worth the money, but barely. But that is a lot more than I can say for numerous other books on the subject. The failures of this book are the publishers, not the authors.

A must have for any bike painter!,

If anyone out there is ready to do a ground up paint job on a bike, then this is the book for you. I just got my copy today too, and there's no need to wonder, I doubt anyone will be disappointed. I've skimmed through it and already got many new gems of knowledge. A++ to JoAnn for her attention to detail. There's a great selection of projects in the book. I like how it's layed out, all the nice photos, and the "Handy Hints" of knowledge sprinkled throughout. This book already has come in handy as I have bought the filler material she recommended and it is way more easier to use than what I was using.
Excellent! This book goes the extra mile and lays out a whole lot of other valuable info from prep to clear. You'll get something out of this book no matter what skill level you're at.

Has it all!,

Wow! This book answered nearly every question I had when I painted my bike. It even has a whole chapter on painting metal flake paint that truly saved me. The molding and bodywork chapters were so helpful. When this chick says she covers all the steps she means it. I know a chick wrote this book, but she really knows her stuff. Don't let that scare you off. She rocks.

I wanted a book that helped me learn more about painting a motorcycle, and this book added to my education in a positive way. The book extensively covers surface preparation techniques and ideas for custom painting, and provides many tips to resolve problems while painting.
This book mainly deals with finishing metal surfaces, and has a page or two dealing with other materials. I would have liked a little more depth on painting and repairing plastic fairing parts. I would also have liked to learn a little more about different types of paint products (lacquer, urethane, water based, etc) in the book. Good book.

I have used the Motorbook series on a couple of projects and I especially like Joann's two manuals on painting. The Motorbooks give a great overview of the projects, but not a lot of exact "do this" step-by-step detail.

Not for a restoration project.,

This book could well be titled " Bondo and exotic paint application" or "painting your chopper" Where would the chopper world be without bondo? They used to call some custom autos "lead sleads" for good reason__more lead body filler than original metal. The jobs is this book are the equivalent__"bondo bikes".
If you want a handbook to help you through restoring and old bike or just redoing your daily ride, look somewhere else.
