I think I read, and loved, all the Betty Cavanna books available when I was 11-12 years old..Now I see some are back in print. Hooray!!..Paintbox Summer was a real winner way back in the 1950's

Teenage romance with realism,

This is a wonderful book and I have read it more than once. It deals with the pain of lost love, but in a healthy way. At one point in the book, when the artist is trying to teach our young heroine to relax and try to paint more naturally, he urges her: "Don't measure for the center. . . strike for it!" This is such good advice (when one is tempted to over-measure) that it has become a family phrase.
