Book Description

January 3, 1994
As an artist, a cat has no home in the world save Paris. (To paraphrase Nietzsche.) Here is the story of Paintbrush, the cat in a bow tie who leaves family, friends, and the Midwest behind to chase a dream of artistic fulfillment. Engagingly illustrated throughout with bright, cheerful watercolors and written in a charming style to match, Paintbrish in Paris is the first book by Jill Butler, a designer and collagist. In it she follows Paintbrush from his first excursions beyond his atelier to the invitation to show his work.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

As an artist, a cat has no home in the world save Paris. (To paraphrase Nietzsche.) Here is the story of Paintbrush, the cat in a bow tie who leaves family, friends and the Midwest behind to chase a dream of artistic fulfillment.

In a charming tale of adventure, Jill Butler follows Paintbrush from his first excursions beyond his atelier to his dream come true-an invitation to show his work. Along the way he learns to live a la francaise in the city of Manet, Degas, Pissarro, and Picasso. He breakfasts on caf, au lait and a croissant amande, travels the metro, shops daily for provisions at open-air markets, haunts museums and the Left Bank galleries. And works, works, works on his exhibition.

Such dedication. Such an artist. Quel chat, Monsieur Paintbrush!

Jill Butler is a free-lance designer and artist who often works in collage. She lives with her cat Paintbrush in Paris (of course), and in Chester Connecticut. Ms. Butler has exhibited her work for the past 10 years at galleries in New York, Connecticut, and Paris.

From the Back Cover

This is the story of Paintbrush, a cat, who goes to Paris to become a great artist and live in a wonderful studio and have a very French experience.

More About the Author

I write because I can't not write. I've always had a pen in my hand and have journaled my whole life. "Create the Space You Deserve" came out of my journals during the time I was divorcing and moving back to the US from Paris, France. I knew I needed to create a new life and to restart from zero. The what I wanted and how to eventually create it came from this writing...My tools, steps, approach and motivation are the first four chapters..followed by the tour of the cottage I eventually created. This is not about cottage design, it is however, about how we arrive at what we want for our lives, and how we choose to live at home and in the world. It is these spaces we create that supports and nests us.
