This review is from: The Painted Desert (Audio CD)
Martin combines an excellent jazz combo with his own unique melodic sense, using world instruments to produce unique timbral experiences. My particular favorites on this CD are _The Diamond Path_, _Favela Song_, and _Afterlife Architecture_.
Martin often combines wildly disparate families of instruments to tremendous effect: orchestral chimes, gamelan gongs, vibraphone, and steel drum, producing amazing beauty, serious funkiness, and just plain fun. The sidemen get their time in the spotlight, and are all equally excellent. I'm not sure who the baritone sax player is on this CD, but he's mind-blowingly good: try _The Worm_ for some amazingly gutsy playing. |
