Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"When the imperial houses of Li and Chen would not stop fighting," begins this exquisitely told tale, "it was easy for Lord Shang to march in and set himself up as ruler." When cruel Lord Shang discovers that his bride-to-be, the peasant girl Bright Willow, loves not him but his groom, Seahorse, he angrily sentences Seahorse to death and Bright Willow to prison--unless she can bring him the Great Pearl. Her enchanted fan shields her from the powers of Red Fang (the pearl's demon guardian), and the fan's painted words, changing to suit the occasion, banish both Red Fang and Lord Shang forever. But Seahorse and Bright Willow are not the peasants they seem, and when they marry they hang above their bed the fan, which now reads, "The houses of Li and Chen are reunited at last." In his first children's book, Ma contributes watercolors of unusual delicacy, but his penchant for expressionless faces may frustrate readers. Nonetheless, this polished story is utterly satisfying in its journey from chaos and confusion to order and harmony. Ages 6-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-Somewhere in mythical Cathay, the Land of the Seven Caves is conquered by a tyrannical usurper, Shang. When a soothsayer prophesies that a painted fan will be his undoing, Lord Shang burns every fan in his realm-except one, passed down in secret from mother to daughter, and now the most precious possession of Bright Willow, a beautiful peasant girl. Catching a glimpse of her, Lord Shang is smitten and demands that she marry him. While waiting for the wedding, Bright Willow falls in love with a handsome groom from the palace stables. The jealous Lord threatens them both with dire punishment, until the girl offers to fetch him a precious pearl hidden deep within a cave and guarded by a ferocious demon. Confronting the demon, Bright Willow discovers that her fan has unexpected powers. Watercolor illustrations, authentic in detail and dramatic in gesture and expression, satisfactorily mix Chinese evocation with Western representation, adding character and color to a rather improbable plot. Two picture-book adaptations of Chinese traditional literature depict a girl outwitting a bully-Molly Bang's Tye May and the Magic Brush (Mulberry, 1992), with its sturdy young heroine, and Doreen Rappaport's The Journey of Meng (Dial, 1991), depicting the trials of a faithful widow. Use these two to introduce readers to Chinese culture, and let them enjoy Singer's book as an entertaining romance, told in smooth text and appealing art.

More About the Author

Marilyn Singer was born in the Bronx (New York City) on October 3, 1948 and lived most of her early life in N. Massapequa (Long Island), NY. She attended Queens College, City University of New York, and for her junior year, Reading University, England. She holds a B.A. in English from Queens and an M.A. in Communications from New York University.

In 1974, after teaching English in New York City high schools for several years, she began to write - initially film notes, catalogues, teacher's guides, and film strips. Then, one day, when she was sitting in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, she penned a story featuring talking insect characters she'd made up when she was eight. Encouraged by the responses she got, she wrote more stories, and in 1976, her first book, The Dog Who Insisted He Wasn't, was published by E.P.Dutton & Co.

Since then, Marilyn has published over eighty books for children and young adults. Her genres are many and varied, including realistic novels, fantasies, non-fiction, fairy tales, picture books, mysteries and poetry. She likes writing many different kinds of books because it's challenging and it keeps her from getting bored.

Marilyn currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband Steve; their standard poodle Oggi, seen in the home page photo; a cat named August ; two collared doves named Jubilee and Holiday; and a starling that says, "Hi. How are you? Sweet Birdie. Okay!" Her interests include ballroom/Latin dancing, dog training, reading, hiking, bird-watching, gardening, playing computer adventure games, and going to the movies and the theatre. She's also a major Star Trek fan.

Marilyn is the former host of the AOL Children's Writers Chat and currently co-hosts the Poetry Blast at various conferences. Visit her web site: www.marilynsinger.net.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very fine illustrations, and adequate supporting story, November 20, 2004

This review is from: The Painted Fan (Hardcover)
Lovely watercolour & pencil illustrations - full of beautiful line and form.

The true rulers of a mythical china "Land of the Seven Caves" are busy quarelling & are easily usurped by the ferocious Lord Shang. After conquering the land, he is content, until a soothsayer prophesies that a painted fan will be his undoing. Skeptical but uneasy, he finally declares all fans are outlawed.

Travelling he sees a simple goatherd he falls in lust with and has her brought to the palace & his downfall begins with quite a few adventures for the heroine along the way.

Naturally everything pans out happily but you may as well keep SOME plot mystery to look forward to, even though it's a picture book.

Very fine illustrations, and an adequate supporting story.
