Book Description

November 30, 1970

The Art of Painted Finish for Furniture & Decoration: Antiquing, Lacquering, Gilding & the Great Impersonators comes with 38 color plates, including of 80 life-style samples, and 100 how-to drawings.

Painted finishes can be used almost everywhere -- on furniture, decorative objects, even the walls of rooms. This book rescues and re-creates this nearly lost art and does so with the realistic and practical use of modern tools and materials.

Generously illustrated, this is a reference book, studio manual, and art book all in one. It is indispensable to professionals -- architects, interior designers and decorators, artists, art teachers and students, and furniture designers -- and to all those interested in arts, crafts and antiques.

If you want lots of inspiring pictures for funky furniture, this book is not for you. But if you want lots of detail on paints/glazes and techniques for classic faux & paint finishes this book will become one of your favorites. It is a must for any library. It is easy to understand as long as you have a small understanding of basic terms. Explainations are detailed and often multi methods are offered to obtain similar results. The author even manages to explain the history and origins of many techniques. This is a "must have" book for anyone with an interest in paint techniques.

This is far more comprehensive than any of the numerous books on this subject. If you want lots of pretty pictures and information for a few DYI projects, any of the others are good. But if you want close-up photos and detailed explainations and line drawings of how to do hundreds of painted finishes, this is the book for you. You can't even imagine what a painted finish can do until you see this. 382 pages - says it all.

If you are a furniture finisher, antigue dealer, or simply looking for information on furniture finishing, this book will guide you through the process. It is really a resource for DIY furniture painters. I found the book a little more than I needed. This is a great book for professional furniture painters and restorers. It offers good information to avoid diminishing the value of antigue pieces.
