3.0 out of 5 stars Great if you're a beginner!
Very good book for novice to intermediate. Well put together -- my only beef is maybe you'll find some of the tutorials are a wee bit redundant going over many the same initial steps.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I've struggled with PAINTER for some time, not really being able to use it . All the books I've had previously explain the tools & brushes etc,and are very tedious & BORING! They want you to spend hours practicing making marks with brushes, pens etc When I got this book with DVD, I was really WOWED! you have access to all the photos he uses & He gives step by step instructions so that you can then use the techniques on your own right away.

I can't say enough great things about the book or the teaching method. It is simple, clear & to the point. He jumps right in, first chapter & you start painting right away, & uses each painting lesson to illustrate many different aspects of Painter. The DVD is invaluable not only for all the information, but you get to see how he is using the brushes to apply the paint. Before this book, I didn't even understand how to use "clone" or "quick clone"! very simple. The book worked for me & I highly recommend it.

Hello. I am using the book to help teach a seniors PAINTER 11 class.
During this past year have tried to find just the right text to assist in teaching the class. Martin Addison's book has been a god send. Just what I have been looking for. The step by step tutorials are so easy to use and follow. The big plus is the CD which is included. Lots of really great material..Roy H.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words from an alleged "expert" user and author of another Photoshop/Painter book, October 18, 2009
This review is from: Painter 11 for Photographers: Creating painterly images step by step (Paperback)
Martin Addison's "Painter 11 for Photographers" is poorly named. It should be called "Painter 11 for Everyone including Artists, Photographers, Casual Users and Everyone Else Not in the First Three Categories." It is one of the books I keep close at hand and I check it regularly for inspiration and clarification. I'm not nearly as comfortable in Painter as I am in Photoshop, and even though I'm also an alleged accomplished user my previous edition of Mr. Addison's book has a worn spine and dog-eared pages.

I -reaaaaally- like his chapter showing the brush variations in a systematic, well done side-by-side comparison. That alone with worth the price of admission, but then he goes and shows the Brush creator to exponentially maximize what came before in such an easy conversational manner that it makes thick skulled people such as myself knock my forehead and say "Eureka!" no matter how many times I read it.

A lot of bang for your buck, Martin Addison's book should NOT be on any Painter user's shelf. It should be open next to the keyboard and digital tablet.

I generally use Painter for freehand work, as I have photo-editing programs I'm happy with. I purchased this book as I saw the potential for working with my images in a different, more refreshing way, and it has gone way beyond my expectations. After starting with images from the included CD, you will quickly find yourself applying your new knowledge to your own images. Well-written.

5.0 out of 5 stars They are # 1, March 2, 2010

Being a visual type of person when I received my copy of Painters 11 for
Photographers I went for the graphics, then the CD. It wasn't long before
disappointment set in. In the Addison file, the licensing agreement was not loading
properly and in Assets the second video would not open. I checked on the internet
and saw that there was a problem with swf. Files, that was at 1 in the morning,
by 4 I was interneted out. The next day I called the publisher, Fosal Press. There
was no one to help me but they took my phone #. I also e-mailed the Author,
Martin Addison. By this time I was slipping into new book withdrawals
because it was becoming very old very fast. I went back to the net for some
hopeful encouragement but to no avail. Then I saw my e-mail flag go up, it was
Martin. I opened the mail and he blew me away with his personalized assistance.
After that I knew I had a winner, it would just take time. We were still not there yet
so I went back to the net. Saw a lot of bad stuff out there about running swf. Files,
then the phone rang. It was the Publisher, Focal Press and in less than one minute
he nailed it, to low on the resolution. What a team, they got my attention. I know
who the Author and Publisher I will be looking for the next time I buy a book.
They are # 1 with me and I give them a 10 on a 1 to 5 scale.

The title of this book says it all. I love to take photos with an idea of using them in artwork, mostly fiber arts, and Martin Addison is an excellent instructor in the use of this photo enhancing program. I downloaded the 30 day free trial of Painter 11 to experiment with when I first received this book because the version of Painter that I had was much older. Martin's instructions going through many different applications step by step, were clear and complete and made it a joy for a non-techno type like myself to follow. I had great fun practising each technique on photos that were in the accompanying DVD and then again on one of my own photos. This latest Painter software is a terrific progam for this sort of work, and I did end up purchasing it. This is because "Painter 11 for Photographers: Creating painterly images step by step" made it so easy for me to learn.

I bought this book not because I wanted to create "paintings" from photographs (really the purpose of the book), but because it was the only book that seemed to promise instructions for HOW to use the program, and it certainly does that--very well and clearly. I've found the book to be exactly what I needed. I now know how to do all the kinds of manipulations I suspected were available, but had no clue how to do. The only area it seems to be lacking (for my purposes) is in how to use selection tools in any more than a very basic way.

Each new version of Painter has great new features and this book is a perfect guide for photographers who want to see what they can do to their pictures that they can't always do with Photoshop.

Great examples and a clear guide to "artify" photographs. When I upgrade Painter a good part of my training upgrade is from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painter 11 - Required Reading for Newbies, February 5, 2011

This review is from: Painter 11 for Photographers: Creating painterly images step by step (Paperback)
I have read several books on how to use Painter 11, the "Painter 11 for Photographers: Creating painterly images step by step" sets the standard for all others to follow. Easy to read. Hundreds of color examples of many brushes and styles. Priced affordable. I have not used the lessons on the disk yet, I have been too involved in trying the different steps to create paintings from photos I have taken over the last 30 years. Having used Painter Photo Essentials for several years, moving to Painter 11 has opened new areas of exploration. I think this book will help me enjoy creating new life in some old photos.

I have a tablet and look forward to try using the brush options. More to come. If you want to start having fun with Painter 11 get this book. Good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photographers - dive straight in..., April 4, 2011

Painter is a powerful but complex piece of software. If, like me, you're a photographer first - not an artist - then there's an awful lot about Painter you just don't need to know to begin with.
This excellent, clearly written book will get you started fast. Into the creative side of working rather than spending days going thru examples or wading thru chapters to find the nuggets you need.
And there's nothing like the positive reinforcement of creating art from your photos to inspire you to want to learn more advanced techniques.

Well illustrated and good physical quality, this book lives on my desk by my Mac. I have several Painter books but this is the only one that I use regularly - I don't have the patience or the time to filter all the functionality I need, from the mountains that I don't.

The only outstanding item that isn't mentioned clearly in the book - and one that you do need to know...is that Painter crashes. A lot.
Save often and use versioning and avoid the pain of losing all your hard work.

Highly recommended for the photographer wanting to explore new avenues with their work.
