Editorial Reviews

Review

"...It is a "must have" .. In my opinion, Jeremy Sutton is THE expert of this wonderful program and this, his latest book, is a joy to have in my library."

"..He places the step-by-step learning process within a larger context, in which Painter becomes a medium that taps into self-dsicovery and releases the creative juices within us in fun, expressive ways."

"If you haven't seen Jeremy's new Painter IX book yet, you are in for a treat. Jeremy, what an incredible piece of work the book is for us Painter Addicts! It's so complete and covers about everything. The extra brushes are great and I already have my favorites and am enjoying playing with them...Thank you for sharing yourself and your talent."

"One of the best Painter books ...if not the best! I've used Painter since version 4 and am familiar with the evolution of this amazing program and have purchased many Painter books during this time. Jeremy's book provides not only excellent technical
instruction (which is meticulously well-organized and well-written) but more importantly for me, excellent art instruction (foundations of drawing and painting are well integrated with the Painter techniques)."
- Dorothy Yamamoto, Graphic Designer and 8 year Painter User

"This book is worth every penny and more, even without the CD (even though I use the brushes on the CD without any problems, by the way). This is a superb book: highly illuminating and very inspiring. I have virtually all the books on Painter (including those for earlier software versions) and this one is in a league of its own. You simply cannot read this book without learning a huge amount and being tremendously inspired by the content and projects. Very intelligently conceived and written book, obviously benefiting from Sutton's teaching experience."
- Sattar Khan, 8 year Painter User

"Sutton takes quite an artistic approach (he is a painter) but provides a sound basis on the use of his "muck up" technique in which he places a swath of loose colour as an under-painting for eventual refinement. He makes the very valid point that this overcomes the natural reluctance of people to start the creative process off - a sort of writer's block."
- Professional Image Maker, Oct 06

"If you need advice on painting for real, as a way to understand Corel Painter, then Barclay Sheaks' book is well recommended."
- Professional Image Maker, Oct 06

More About the Author

Jeremy Sutton is a world-renowned artist, author, educator, Corel Painter Master and pioneer in the field of digital painting. His background combines art and science. Jeremy, who has drawn since he was three, studied drawing, sculpture and print-making at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University, as he earned a degree in Physics. While pursuing a career selling superconducting magnets and cryogenic systems for Physics research, he continued his art studies, learning lithography at the Vrije Academie in The Hague, The Netherlands.

It was after his move to live in the heart of Silicon Valley in the late '80s that Jeremy was first introduced to the powerful combination of the Macintosh computer, pressure-sensitive Wacom graphics tablet and sophisticated paint programs that could emulate natural art media. These tools took Jeremy on a new journey of art exploration that included a career transition into being a full-time professional artist, painting a live digital portrait of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson on the San Francisco Virgin Atlantic Inaugural and traveling the world teaching and demonstrating digital painting technology at numerous trade shows, conferences, workshops and seminars.

Painter 11 Creativity: Digital Artist's Handbook, is Jeremy's sixth and most recent book. He has also authored and produced instructional videos and DVDs, and founded the online training web site PaintboxJ.com. He runs digital painting workshops in his San Francisco studios.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painter IX Creatiivity: Digital Artists Handbook, August 27, 2005

This review is from: Painter IX Creativity: Digital Artists Handbook (Paperback)
I was disappointed in the Painter 8 book, and in this one as well. I bought it, because it was completely rewritten, and I thought it would be more usefulfor a photographer like myself who can't paint. Instead, it lacked things even the former edition had. He might be a good artist, but not a good textbook writer.,

None of the images were on the CD for practicing along with the lessons. Settings for the brushes were not included in the lessons. Vague generalities were used to describe how to do cloned paintings. Only 2 chapters covered the actual painting/cloning process.

Instead, I highly recommend Painter IX for Photographers by Addison, which has step-by-stem lessons that are specific and helpful!! It also has his images on the CD, so you can follow along.

Far beyond being a Painter for dummies... Jeremys straight forward approach offers not only how to use the tools, but when and why. Corel Painter is not exactly an easy program to learn. While I am fairly proficient with Photoshop, I've been stuck with learning Painter. I bought the DVD's first... but "Painter IX Creativity... digital artists handbook" provided the reference and more. In addition, he also provided some art background, his philosophy and mindset for an efficient workflow. This is a MUST for anyone wanting to learn Painter from a Master.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great CD!, May 3, 2005

This is a great book for learning and working with Painter IX. The CD that was included with the book works fine and is very helpful. If you have used Photoshop and think that the two programs are the same then this book will more than show you that Painter IX takes working with paints and photos in a completely different direction. I work with Photoshop at work for pictures, but at home I turn to Painter IX and really have fun. Jeremy clearly knows the program and is able to explain things in a very clear fashion. If you have Painter IX or are thinking about getting Painter IX then you need this book.
