I was disappointed in the Painter 8 book, and in this one as well. I bought it, because it was completely rewritten, and I thought it would be more usefulfor a photographer like myself who can't paint. Instead, it lacked things even the former edition had. He might be a good artist, but not a good textbook writer.,

None of the images were on the CD for practicing along with the lessons. Settings for the brushes were not included in the lessons. Vague generalities were used to describe how to do cloned paintings. Only 2 chapters covered the actual painting/cloning process.

Instead, I highly recommend Painter IX for Photographers by Addison, which has step-by-stem lessons that are specific and helpful!! It also has his images on the CD, so you can follow along.

Far beyond being a Painter for dummies... Jeremys straight forward approach offers not only how to use the tools, but when and why. Corel Painter is not exactly an easy program to learn. While I am fairly proficient with Photoshop, I've been stuck with learning Painter. I bought the DVD's first... but "Painter IX Creativity... digital artists handbook" provided the reference and more. In addition, he also provided some art background, his philosophy and mindset for an efficient workflow. This is a MUST for anyone wanting to learn Painter from a Master.

This is a great book for learning and working with Painter IX. The CD that was included with the book works fine and is very helpful. If you have used Photoshop and think that the two programs are the same then this book will more than show you that Painter IX takes working with paints and photos in a completely different direction. I work with Photoshop at work for pictures, but at home I turn to Painter IX and really have fun. Jeremy clearly knows the program and is able to explain things in a very clear fashion. If you have Painter IX or are thinking about getting Painter IX then you need this book.

This book, and Jeremy Sutton's DVD collection on Painter IX are used in his week long class in San Francisco on Painter. I'm reading the book now and it's great! It's not a nuts and bolts of how to use Painter. It's more about the artistic side of color, light, etc. He shows how to set up painter, and all the best settings and brushes. He also has a CD with the book of his favorite homade brushes. It's a great book.

Jeremy Sutton's Painter IX Creativity is a course on secrets of the great masters of digital art. I have been working with Painter for years and yet the descriptions of working with the brush creator and backing up brush libraries was so well documented and explained that I felt I had peeled back another layer of comprehension hitherto hidden from me. This book is the result of years of on-line courses, master seminars, and research for previous books as well as many years of extraordinary digital art making and Jeremy Sutton has put it all together in an elegant and insightful manner. He illuminates the technical complexities of Painter and is incredibly generous in sharing his process with his readers. It is a delight to use.

if not the best! I've used Painter since version 4 and am familiar with the evolution of this amazing program and have purchased many Painter books during this time. Jeremy's book provides not only excellent technical instruction (which is meticulously well-organized and well-written) but more importantly for me, excellent art instruction (foundations of drawing and painting are well integrated with the Painter techniques). What you are able to learn is independent of what the CD contains (which has supplmentary brushes, goodies). I also have purchased the 4-DVD instruction set for Photographers which should not deter non-photographers from using it (like me). Now THAT is a great supplement to the Painter IX book!

After working with Photoshop for over 10 years, I finally decided to take the plunge and give Painter a try. Being one of the only seven people on Earth that read the directions beofre working with a product, I bought Jeremy's book to give me an overview. It is everything I had hoped for and more. Just enough of the nuts and bolts to get me started, but enough to be boring. A good, solid beginning (and intermediate) look at the capabilities of this program. the advanced techniques look like fun and are not presented in an intimidating "look how cool my artwork is" way.

Yep, expensive, but worth it!!!

First of all, this is aimed at beginers and non-artists--that is, those who don't think of themselves as such. Fair enough, however, the approach for most of the book is to employ the technique of "painting over" a photograph in Painter. Not a bad technique, but just be warned that this isn't one of those book with amazing original compositions and step by stop guides on how they were created.
That said, I think this is a good place to get many of the basics of the program nailed down. And as with all complex graphics programs, the best way is to start out with the basics and then experiment. No one book can really even begin cover the range of techniques and tricks that are possible.

I had opportunity to attend one of Jeremy's classes several years ago and Painter IX Creativity is almost like being at another class. A very informative book that really inspires you to paint. Great Job Jeremy!

Jeremy Sutton has written a book that is not only extremely well presented, but is concise and succinct. Clearly this is a man who enjoys sharing his artistic skills with the rest of the world.

He presents each lesson in a personal matter. Working through his book you may feel as though he is directing his comments and tips directly to you. This book is not a lesson in painting and drawing, it's purpose is to get you using Painter IX effectively and he achieves this easily.

Beautifully illustrated and well written Jeremy Sutton has the ability to lead the new user of Painter IX into the application quickly, before you know it you're hooked. For the more experienced user of Painter IX this book is a valuable edition to your user library. It's one of those books you'll find hard to put down, immersing you into the beauty of digital art with ease whilst challenging you to achieve more than you realised possible.

Don't over look this book, it really is one of the best for Painter IX users of all levels.
