5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Indeed!
I first discovered Cher Threinen-Pendarvis' Painter WOW! books when I was struggling to learn Painter 5.5 all by myself in a rural area where no one had even heard of digital painting. I own The Painter 5,6,7,8 and IX Wow!Books and I credit the author of these books as one who is responsible for my passion for digital painting and my love of the Painter program. The only...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great for beginner
This book has a lot of great examples of illustration, but the layout of the book is way too confusing. I found myself often lost where I should continue to read. The intro for interface has very little help for the beginner to start this program. This book might be good reference for advanced users, but not for beginners. The only problem is having space for all of the books, for I would not part with one of them as they are filled with underlining, with my notes, and the quality art work is a source of inpiration.

The Painter IX Wow! Book teaches the novice not only how to use the program but, through artists'examples, how to apply that knowledge to whatever type of art one wishes to create. It also teaches veteran users about the new features in Painter IX. This is a book to pore over, to study, not just breeze through, although that alone is pure pleasure due to the quality of the pictures. The book functions as a good on-going reference to look up "how-to" instruction regarding using the features of the program and it includes familiar and new to the book artists and as well as information not in previous Wow! editions. Also included is an excellent chapter on printing digital paintings and the resource section in the Appendix is valuable. I highly recommend this book to those new to Painter and to veteran users of the program as well.

This book has a lot of great examples of illustration, but the layout of the book is way too confusing. I found myself often lost where I should continue to read. The intro for interface has very little help for the beginner to start this program. This book might be good reference for advanced users, but not for beginners. Maybe the author wants to make a nice-looking book, but this book is over-designed, lack of functionality . I would recommend video tutorial from Lynda.com, it's ideal for beginners who never used Corel Painter and Wacom drawing tablets.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best one yet..., May 9, 2005

This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
With this edition of Painter IX Wow! Book, Cher Threinen-Pendarvis has revealed Painter in even greater detail than her previous editions with in-depth discussions of Painter's interface and tools, its brushes (old and new), and more examples. Both the entry-level and experienced Painter user will find useful and practical information.

In addition, the expanded contributing artists galleries with discussions of how each image was painted, showcase the amazing stylistic diversity of the artists who use Painter--animation, book illustration, editorial cartooning, web graphics, jewlery design, fine art (both representational and abstract), medical illustration, etc.--showing the flexibility of Painter's digital artistic tools which allow the user to work entirely within the digital realm and its integration with traditional artistic tools.

Even if you have a previous edition, this is a must-have book!

5.0 out of 5 stars If only we could all become renowned artists..., May 28, 2005
By

This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
This book offers a first-hand look at how to take full advantage of many of the tools' feature set. From layering colors to enhancing photos to various imaging effects and beyond, the author explains how you too can become a master of this latest version of Painter. With numerous color examples of what others have done with the tool, ideas will flow and you'll see how limited your own skills are. If you can envision it, you can certainly do it with this tool, and this book will help you use the tool better. Thankfully, there is always Undo for those times when your own skills are lacking in what actually looks good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book, May 20, 2005
This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
My only problem with this book is that I look at the selection of work that is exhibited here and lament my own limited talent. In the hands of these people Painter is what mere canvas was to the old masters.

I must say that Ms. Threinen-Pendarvis has done a masterful job in her own right in explaining what the program will do. Her approach, her writing style, is much, much better than the standard click-on-this approach used by many writers and suitable for the beginner or power user.

This is combined with what seems like more than one color picture on each page, brilliantly printed on a very white paper stock. It's a beautiful, as well as informative book.

Now if only I could load the CD [demo version of the software, phots, video clips, stuey guide and over 100 custom brushes, and more (developed by Cher)] into my head and develop some talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite priority buy for Painter tutorials, December 26, 2005

Well written with many different styles and applications illustrated throughout. Yes, it is very technical and hard to follow when just reading, but all graphics software tutorials are. You have to sit down with this book and work through the chapters, especially if you have no training in Photoshop. If you are serious about using Painter, then this book is a must have and probably all you need.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, too advanced for my level, November 6, 2006
By

This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
I had great hopes for The Painter IX Book, but I don't think it was a good fit for my experience level. I was looking for a book that would show me how to get started, literally from scratch as I have no experience with this type of fine art program. There really is no place in this book that takes you from the very first steps of "create a new document, etc...." I just found the interface too complex, the options too numerous to get a basic, solid start. If I can find a source to learn the very basics step by step, I would definitely be well served by this book when I am ready for it's more advanced techniques that seem to take for granted that you have a solid foundation of how to use the Painter IX program. I do have a Wacom drawing tablet which is absolutely imperative if you are to access any of Painter's amazing effects. So, if you are experienced with this type of fine art drawing program, this is a beautiful book with lots of good info - I just don't feel it's suitable for beginners like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Again, it's a Wow book, how can you go wrong?, June 7, 2007
This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
I bought Painter not knowing how to use it, so I needed a book - this book. Besides packed with extras; such as paper textures & brushes, it gives you detailed information on how to set up your digital medium settings; from acrylics to charcoal pencils. It explains what control does what, settings for a particular brush used in examples, a gallery of other artwork, even a whole chapter dedicated on how to create custom brushes. I know how to use Painter now.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best I've seen to date!, March 10, 2007
By
This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
Cher has put together a remarkably clear
"how-to" book for those using Painter
for the first time.
As a professor of graphics and fine art, found
the book to be the best so far
for the explanation and application of
a painter program.
Kudos to Cher!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers every aspect of painter, July 5, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Painter IX Wow! Book (Paperback)
This book does not focus on just one aspect of painter, such as painting photographs or raw illustration. It goes through each different use of painter in good detail.

This is a strength of the book, but a weakness as well since I was looking more for painting photographs. It is well written and "technical enough."

A CD is included.
