4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition to Your Art Instruction Library, October 4, 2008
This review is from: The Painterly Approach: An Artist's Guide To Seeing, Painting And Expressing (Hardcover)
Bob Rohm's, "The Painterly Approach," is an excellent addition to any artist's library for learning the keys and some advanced concepts of oil painting. I especially enjoyed his discussion on the difference between the "linear approach" to oil painting and the "painterly approach." One of the best instruction books I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their oil and plein air skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational How-To with some of Bob's best work, October 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Painterly Approach: An Artist's Guide To Seeing, Painting And Expressing (Hardcover)
I took a workshop with Bob Rohm about ten years ago in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. He got me started in pastels and I've loved them ever since. I was anxious to get this book as soon as I saw it appear on Amazon. The examples are great, the explanations are concise, well written, and well illustrated; and the work in the book is truly inspirational. This is one of those books that you can review over and over not only for what it teaches, but also to simply enjoy all of those beautiful paintings in both oil and pastel. For the price you can get it on Amazon, it's really a no-brainer. And you should be happy that you did get it for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, information I can understand and use!, December 13, 2008

This book is one of dozens I have purchased over the years and it is the first that is written in plain language that is easy to understand. Yes, there is a lot of reitteration, the same principles stated over and over, as in all instructional books...but this book is different. It actually explains procedures and ideas in basic language. I am extremely pleased with this purchase and recommend it to anyone not already a 'professional artist', who knows it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellant resource, January 25, 2009
This review is from: The Painterly Approach: An Artist's Guide To Seeing, Painting And Expressing (Hardcover)
Excellant book for building solid foundation and design for paintings, materials, color harmony. Written like he would talk to you, which makes it fun to read. Beautiful illustrations. Very well done and a useful resource that I will actually use repeatedly rather than, as with some, let it just occupy space on the book shelf.

This book is filled with beautiful examples of landscape painting and contains clear, practical instruction to painting in any medium. Insights into problems that would take years of experience to discover are explained through a well organized format. I close it wanting more!

Excellent!!! I read cover to cover - I like the artists approach to the subject. Since Bob Rohm is a successful working artist I can appreciate his comments. I will be recommending his book to my students!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a useful book!, December 28, 2009

When you're getting to be a pretty decent landscape painter -- on that cusp between talented amateur and totally obscure professional -- you need more help shaking the cobwebs out of your head than you do technical instruction on color theory. You need help in understanding why some things are working for you and some are not. Rohm's patient, practical, plain-English thoughts about painting go right at the cobwebs. Of course, I'm partial to his thoughts because he's the kind of painter I want to be. I found his book while looking for contemporary plein aire painters whose work might inspire me. What a great surprise to discover that he's clearly a gifted teacher, as well, and has recently created this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars For All Medias . . ., October 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Painterly Approach: An Artist's Guide To Seeing, Painting And Expressing (Hardcover)
This is a good book for an artist, especially a beginning artist, who wants answers to practical questions. There is a common sense guide to materials needed for several mediums. The book takes you from your first purchases through composition, the importance of light and chosing colors. This book also defines the difference between drawing and painterly. It's a good handbook for artists to have on hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible book, December 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Painterly Approach: An Artist's Guide To Seeing, Painting And Expressing (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book! Aside from Bob's simple, yet incredibly effective technique, this book is laid out well. He goes through his approach step by step, covering everything from composition to values (the most important part). He shows several of his paintings in the various stages to completion, and he is descriptive yet he is very easy to understand. I think anyone interested in improving their painting skills and who are ready to turn out a great piece, no matter the medium, should really look at his approach. This technique forces an artist to really "see" what they are about to paint, not just "copy" the scene. Bob helps one see the lights and darks and masses and values, so after these things are established on the paper/canvas, the painting is nearly done, but for the details and highlights. I recommend his video as well....along with the book, one can't help but get excited to paint!!
