4.0 out of 5 stars A bag of wisdoms., August 29, 2001
This review is from: Painters on Painting (Dover Fine Art, History of Art) (Paperback)
This book is a collection of comments, tips, opinions, guidance, and whatever-you-call-it, of genius painters, from Leonardo, Rembrandt, to contemporary artists. One of the things that make arts timeless is that each and every artist has his own eye, approach, and technique, to uniquely convey what reflects nature through their soul.
You've got it all in this compact book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ANY SERIOUS ARTIST, January 4, 2012
This review is from: Painters on Painting (Dover Fine Art, History of Art) (Paperback)
This classic Dover publication is extraordinary. The editor has an uncanny ability for finding the most potent personal letters and comments by the most important
artists in history. The selections are then organized chronologically so that a subtle narrative builds from the secure Classical traditions manifest
in the Italian Renaissance forward century by century into the present age and culminates in the complex and contradictory thrusts so common to our era. I have used
this book as a textbook in courses in Aesthetics and for the student new to the mind stretching reflections and analytical prose so common to aesthetical studies the
sage earthy wisdom written by practicing artists is a life saver. I am sure more than one student has stayed the Aesthetic course because of this fabulous book and aside
from that the general reader is in for a revelation. William Havlicek PhD
