I bought this book to help me learn how to paint clouds. The book advertised that it would help me turn my fluffy cotton balls into clouds. It didn't. I was very dissapointed with the quality of the paintings done by the demonstrators. I wanted a classical look, not something that looked like a graphic.

3.0 out of 5 stars A few bright lights, but not many in this book, October 6, 2009

This review is from: Painter's Quick Reference - Landscapes (Paperback)
Another isn the painter's quick reference series, and another of North Lights multi-authored books. Overall, it's not a great book, but there are some good chapters. This book is a step above North Light's very-forgetable Trees and Foliage, but it still suffers from some of the same failings. There are a few fine demonstrations that are worth reading by the novice painter. Claudia Nice clearly presents an approach for believable underwater stones. Mary Anderson's sea grasses are quite believable. Terrence Tseh outlines an easy approach to thunderheads. Hugh Green has an interesting, if a bit quaint, approach to a distant landscape. There are also several interesting landscapes done in watercolors, and a few more ideas for acrylics. All in all, there are several good demonstrations peppered through this book, and perhap enough of them to compensate for other chapters that leave much to be desired. Not sure that I'd have bought it if I'd had a chance to look through it first, but I'll keep it on my shelf for a while.
