This is a tremendous book - almost as big as a canyon itself. It's full of superb paintings and I like the broad selection with its wide appeal. Not such a fantastic assortment of paintings. Was disappointed with the selection of artists and/or their works.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, September 21, 2010
This review is from: Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts (Hardcover)
This is a tremendous book - almost as big as a canyon itself. It's full of superb paintings and I like the broad selection with its wide appeal. This is much more than a coffee table book, it includes a series of essays giving a background to the painters that have visited and painted this region. Is there anything more wondrous than the canyons of this area? These painters capture the essence of the canyons - the quality of the light, the texture of the rock surfaces, the scale of the magnificent scenery and the colours of the desert and canyon. I have too many favourites to mention them all here. Some of the paintings are breathtaking. I think in this huge selection, there is something for everyone. This is a dramatic book that serves its dramatic subject well. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consumate collection and text, June 7, 2010

This review is from: Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts (Hardcover)
A spectacularly researched and selectively collected review of a grouping of artist largely overlooked outside of the genre which it represents.
The works are not limited by their subject matter, but reflect the unique landscape that shaped them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate painter's book of Utah red rock, August 16, 2011
This review is from: Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts (Hardcover)
The book is hands down the best book on its subject, and could easily serve as a guidebook for a Utah road trip. Elegantly presented, this book is thorough in its history and coverage of artists. As a native Utahn and young artist who paints Southwestern landscapes, this book is incredibly handy as a reference and I often page through for inspiration. I've watched friends from all over the world swoon over this book the past few years. I happened to stumble upon the opening of this book at the Springville Art Museum in Utah while driving through the state, thereby viewing many of the works in person - their presentation in the book is expertly handled. Over a year later I met co-author Vern Swanson (curator of the museum) - what an incredibly friendly and energetic guy. If you make a road trip through Utah, visit the museum, a hidden gem and the oldest in the West.

If you love red rock country as I do then you will love this book. What I really love about it is that it covers traditional to contemporary. A true inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeilievably beautiful and comprehensive, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Painters of Utah's Canyons and Deserts (Hardcover)
The book exceeded my expectations in each major component: the selection of artists and paintings, the quality of photographs, and the prose. I think that says it all. An excellent piece of work.
