From Library Journal
At the opposite end of the spectrum from Cathy Johnson's work (reviewed above) is this volume by self-taught artist Phalen. The 14 projects are, without apology, quaint and idealized views of rural America, covering such themes as "Water Pump and Pansies," "Fuchsia and Hummingbird," and "Moonglow, Mount Hood." Each begins with a line drawing, which the novice is encouraged to photocopy and trace onto the painting surface. Recommended for larger collections serving beginners seeking a low-stress route to painting "Smiling Holsteins" and other homey subjects from a subjective perspective.
