Book Description

February 2001
From Boldini, Schiele, Grosz and Picasso to Hockney, Freud and the latest wave of new emerging artists, this book celebrates the turbulent history and extraordinary revolutions in styles and attitudes towards the portrait in European and American art throughout the 20th century. One hundred portraits, including cultural icons and some of the most important works of art from the last century, are here presented chronologically to form an overview of portraiture and the portrait from 1900 to 2000. The text places each work in its cultural and artistic context, and gives biographies for all the artists illustrated.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

London's National Portrait Gallery celebrated the millennium with an exhibit of major portraits from around the world one portrait representing each year of the century. This book is the companion volume. Gibson, chief curator of the National Portrait Gallery, devised the exhibit, and the accompanying book begins with his explanation of the concept, followed by an informative essay by Norbert Lynton (emeritus, art history, Univ. of Sussex) titled "Portraits from a Pluralist Century." A year-by-year table of historic and cultural events prefaces each decade. Well-known and more obscure artists and subjects are represented in both conventional and avant-garde portraiture, and each well-produced image is accompanied by stories of both the artist and the subject. Lovely to look at and fascinating to read, this book brings fresh insight to our understanding of portrait artistry. Recommended for public and academic libraries. One painting for every year of the century. Lots of paintings that I'd never seen before. Writing was interesting too. AA+++
