4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have been better...
When I first found out that this compilation existed, it caught me off guard. 3.0 out of 5 stars 2.5 Star Review:
My issue with this band is that they aren't consistant in their sound. I mean on one side you have Scalzo, a guy writing unique songs incorporating different sounds & instruments & then on the other side you have Zuniga writing generic alt/college rock! That's always been the problem with this band, they've never had the heart to drop dead weight. You'd think that when...

When I first found out that this compilation existed, it caught me off guard. Fastball had only released 3 studio albums prior to this collection and in my mind it was too soon for this album to exist (note that the record company and Fastball had already parted ways when this record was released so it's safe to say that this was released for "economic" issues only). When I read the tracklisting the obvious song titles were present, with one unreleased song (Black Rain) and one B-side (Emotional) added to the mix. Owning all of this material on the original studio albums, I passed on this collection but I can still vouche for this release since I'm familiar with all of the songs and it's worth any price you pay for it. Fastball is truly an underrated band that if you care to listen to this disc you too will appreciate this Austin, TX group just like all of the fans they've picked up over the years. Highlights are (all of the songs are highlights, I mean this a "Best Of" package!) "Are You Ready For The Fallout?, "Slow Drag", "Sooner Or Later", "The Way", "Out Of My Head" & "Fire Escape". PLEASE BUY THIS RECORD!

I seldom write music reviews for Amazon but this album has had me humming all day. I can't say enough about how the well-crafted pop songs are catchy and intelligent. This album ranks up there with Squeeze's "Singles - 45's and Under" and Gin Blossoms "New Miserable Experience" in terms of almost every song being solid. Will definitely get played over and over in my house.

I can't believe that over 10 has passed since their first album and they're still writing killer songs. I put their stuff on my MP3 and just play all albums together. It's all good. There are few bands that have ever had this level of quality.

You'd think that when 90% of the songs people like from your band are all written by Scalzo, that maybe splitting the duties 50 / 50 may not be the way to go. As a fan of the songs "The Way" & "Ougtta My Mind" this band has & will always frustrate me. It's always a give in that I'm only gonna like half the songs on any album they put out. Who knows how many more great songs Scalzo has written for this band only to have them discarded by Zuniga trying to make room for his own mediocre stuff......... Sux.

4.0 out of 5 stars four stars because of confusion, June 22, 2004
This review is from: Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball (Audio CD)
Why does Fastball have a compelation CD? They had only had three previous albums before this, and in my opinion that is too soon for a compelation album. Fastball is still a young band with, hopefully, more albums to come. They are a great band and I love their music. I would give this CD five stars for the material, but I take away a star simply because they haven't had enough albums for a compelation.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is justwhat you want: pure classics, January 4, 2003
This review is from: Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball (Audio CD)
It seems that fastball has had quite a career. They have had three albums, all with remembering tunes. There song have been featured on soundtracks, The NOW cd's and they even had the biggest hit of the 1999 summer "The Way" But not many people want all the songs. They want songs that they remember, people wonder what fastball was like at there best. This album sums it up. It truly shows fastball at there best. It has all the hits that were on the radio... If you want to hear songs by fastball but don't want some of their other "non hit" songs flooding your album, this would be the album for you. Plus it has an enhanced CD for more fun. Buy it!
