He uses cabinets and chests in a variety of sizes and styles as his "canvas" for 15 demonstrations. The book provides a wide spectrum of methods, from traditional folk landscapes to Baroque florals, faux fabrics, and faux marquetry. An excellent complement, from an entirely different point of view, to Sybil Edwards's Folk Art Style: Traditional and Contemporary Painting for Everyday Objects (reviewed above).

At first glance, Myer's latest book seems to lack wonderment; after all, the 15 projects follow rather strict instructions and guidelines. On closer inspection, however, the reader's reaction dramatically changes. New techniques debut here. There is a punched wood chest, emulating in grain what is normally executed on tin or other metals. Myer unveils dimensional stenciling, whereby each cutout is plastered with a specialty paste to achieve stand-out effects. Patterns are playful as well as traditional, including a mock red plaid, outsider art-type folk painting, faux marquetry, and fruits tumbling over a chest. Important, too, are the actual directions, which detail each step in words and in photographs; color chips are included to match shades perfectly. And to erase any doubts about what to use, tools and materials also receive full photographic treatment. Appended are templates, glossary, and sources. Barbara Jacobs

Dynamic book showcasing ideas for a do it yourself decorator,

This book is so colorful and graphic in its presentation. I am a graphic designer and I found the easy to follow step by step photos enabled me to succesfully complete many of the techniques in this book on pieces of funriture in my own home. Although I have some art background this book helped me in areas I was unfamilar with- painting technique, faux finishes, brush loading and finishing. I would recommend this book to any creative or non-creative person. You are sure to have success with this book I know I did! You will love it!
