Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kalon Baughan is a highly accomplished wildlife painter, canoeist, and Colorado naturalist. He and his wife, Brook, feature 18 painting demonstrations of bears, wild cats, birds, wolves, elk, etc. The title notwithstanding, this book is not solely focused on the faces of wildlife. Instructions for eyes, ears, and horns are complemented by renderings of fur and feathers and techniques for capturing natural movement in the wild. Other fine books in this genre include Bill Tilton's Drawing and Painting Animals (LJ 3/15/97), but this volume adds essential advanced skills like the building of a floating blind and techniques of wilderness photography. 4.0 out of 5 stars top notch instruction for wildlife painting, August 3, 2000
This review is from: Painting the Faces of Wildlife Step by Step (Hardcover)
I am a professional wildlife artist who is familiar with Kalon's work through national art exhibits. I have always admired his beautiful paintings and now I have even more appreciation for his work after reading his well thought out and beautifully illustrated new book. His clear step by step instruction takes you through his process of creating lifelike faces in a variety of animals and his advice for researching your subject is very informative. A must have for any artist interested in painting animals!

5.0 out of 5 stars Painting the Faces of Wildlife Step-by-Step, April 30, 2001
This review is from: Painting the Faces of Wildlife Step by Step (Hardcover)
I was at the Texas Woodcarver's Guild Spring Roundup in Fredericsburg, TX, recently and saw a copy of this book. As a woodcarver I would rate this book as excellent. The book has excellent detailed pictures of faces of various animals. As a carver, I must pay attention to exact details such as hair color and texture, eye size and color, ears details, and all facets of wildlife characteristics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn wildlife details for painting, carving, or general knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, August 19, 2001
This review is from: Painting the Faces of Wildlife Step by Step (Hardcover)
How to review this book is a problem. It is simply the best book on the subject that I have ever seen. It goes through the usual informative sections on animal anatomy and several step-by-step demonstrations and details. It is here where this book stands out, in the detail of the demonstrations. From detail information on the underpainting technique to detailing, drybrushing and using washes it covers everything in an easy to understand manner. If you want to paint wildlife and have not had an expensive course in a high quality art school then this is the book that you want to buy.
