Book Description

August 2002
Simplification is the key to this author's approach to the difficult task of introducing figures and animals into a painting. Start with a "stick person" or a basic geometric shape for an animal form, then build up detail gradually and feel confidence growing; soon even a subject as difficult as portraiture will be within reach. Illustrated with the author's charming sketches, and paintings in pastel, watercolor and oil paint.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

As in real life, people and animals have much in common as painting subjects. Whether adding them to a background, portraying them interacting, suggesting movement and gesture, or capturing facial expression, the artist faces similar conceptual tasks. Since capturing a likeness can seem daunting, Evans offers gently graduated techniques that start with the simplest of lines and progress to an evocative scene of grazing sheep or a child tugging at the hand of an adult. There are many excellent books on each genre separately, such as Linda Birch!s How To Draw and Paint Animals (LJ 11/15/97) and Rachel Rubin Wolf!s Keys to Painting: Faces & Figures (LJ 11/15/99), but this is the only volume that successfully combines the two. Recommended.

This review is from: Painting Figures & Animals with Confidence (Paperback)
I borrowed a copy of this wonderful book from my local library when I started a pastel and watercolor class. I found Margaret Evans instructions so easy and delightful that putting pen/pencil/brush to paper to do the exercises and feel instantly rewarded with great results such a joy. She quickly replaces ones fear and reticence with confidence. The book teaches how to simplify, scale and emphasis, movement, gesture, tone, and other aspects of adding people and animals to ones paintings, from a distant figure to a close up. I have it now in my personal library.
