5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly their finest moment, May 3, 2005
This review is from: Painting on Glass (Audio CD)
Moving even further from their atmospheric doom roots, The 3rd and the Mortal, try with this album to reach even more experimental venues than their previous EP "Nightswan". Having found a very talented vocalist in the face of Ann-Mari Edvarsen helps their job even more as her voice is easily one of the highlights of this album. The album begins with the slow and dreamy "Magma" where Ann-Mari begins to show her skills. The next two tracks are slow melodic pieces and endorse even the sound of saxophone. As with any other 3rd and the Mortal album there are several types of songs on this album as well. I'd like to mention two brilliant pieces of guitar ambience on "Aurora Borealis" and "Aurora Australis" and the beautiful piano piece "Veiled Exposure", all of these assorted by the ethereal and soul capturing voice of Ann-Mari. It is an interesting fact that most of the tracks found on this album are instrumentals but each and every one of them is also enriched with chants and other vocal effects. One can also find on this album the second part of "Vavonia", a typical description of The 3rd and the Mortal's sound and an all in all wonderful track. This is one of those albums that must be heard in their entirety to be fully enjoyed and appreciated since there are no hit songs or catchy melodies here. I can tell you that much, that this is one of my favorite albums ever but one could need time to get into as it's very experimental and requires your full attention. People who are not afraid of a little experimentation pick this up without any other hesitation.
