Very general with limited discussion, June 19, 2006
This book is frequently described elsewhere as "Painting in Oils by Norman Battershill." I suspect, but don't know for certain, that this is the U.S. printing of that U.K. based book.
From the book - this is based on the following volumes of the Leisure Arts series - Working with oils by Battershill, Painting Landscapes in Oils by Battershill, Painting Flowers in Oils by Battershill, Basic Oil Brushwork by Bayly, Painting Boats and Harbors in Oils by Bayly, Painting Portraits in Oils by Frost, and Oil Painting Outdoors by Gilman.
Each section of the book has a few tips, a few examples, and a few demonstrations. The demonstrations are small and limited, being only 1 to 5 illustrations each. The tips scattered throughout the book are more useful to the beginner, but the illustrations are too limited to serve as anything but general references to those tips. In fact several demonstrations consist of nothing but the illustration and an accompanying note describing one feature in that illustration to note.
It's a simple book. If you're a beginner with no other books to reference it might be worth picking up for a couple dollars.
