Book Description

4 and upCreative Kids
Lin Wellford, the original "rock artist" shows kids how to create amazing creatures, incredible toys and wild gifts for their friends and family. All it takes is some paint, a few rocks and a little imagination! Easy-to-follow pictures and instructions show kids how to turn stones into everything from racecars and lizards to teddy bears and flowers! They'll learn how to draw each design on a rock with a pencil, then paint the details in whatever colours they choose. Kids can decorate their rooms, make doorstops or bookends, or just paint something for fun. They can make each project look just like the real thing or wild and wacky. The choice is theirs - and so is the fun!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5-All shapes of hand-sized and smaller rocks are used to create a wide variety of clever and artistic projects. The ideas are grouped into 10 different categories from rock fish through rocky roadsters and rockosaurs. Sharp, full-color photographs placed on a white background and black-and-white, step-by-step directions make the creation of each project clear. These pictures show not only the steps involved, but also which brushes to use, how to hold them, and how to create sharp lines. Captions tell how to mix paints and apply them. Great care has been taken to make each project artistic, imaginative, attractive, and easy to accomplish. Children, camp counselors, teachers, group leaders, and parents looking for challenging and satisfying crafts will find this book outstanding.

More About the Author

A small river rock picked up while walking along a creek in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas was the start of a lifelong fascination for artist Lin Wellford. She took it home and painted on a few simple details. The transformation was immediate and amazing. Painting in three dimensions made her little rock rabbit seem to come to life.
After years of painting hundreds more creatures of all kinds, Lin responded to repeated requests for a book that would share her techniques for painting rocks, as well as pointers on how to choose rocks and how to match rock shapes to their perfect subject.
Her first book, The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks, came out in 1994 and immediately became a bestseller. It was followed by a yet more books, each taking on a different subject, including painting flowers and little cottages on rocks, painting rock pets, projects for kids to paint, easy projects for brand new painters, and most recently, a book devoted to painting manufactured stones and edging to turn any outdoor space into a garden gallery.
In addition to her books, Lin was a frequent guest on HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, and has appeared on dozens of national, regional, and local television shows to spread the word about the accessibility and fun of rock painting. She is also the author of The New Grandparents Name Book.

5.0 out of 5 stars How shall we say... NOT JUST FOR KIDS!, March 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Painting on Rocks for Kids (Creative Kids) (Paperback)
This book is perfect for beginning painters of all ages! Painting on Rocks for Kids could be especially useful for teachers, Scout leaders, youth activity directors and anyone who enjoys helping children explore their own emerging creativity. If you think about it... Rock painting provides an inexpensive and exciting art activity that builds painting skills. If you wanted to... you could even sell them. (like I do!)

Something I like especially in this book are the lizards... they are not shown on the cover of the book but they are the cutest... I would have bought the book even if the only thing it taught you was the lizards... (the lizards really look like they are sitting on the rock! This book is worth several times what Amazon.com is charging. You will love it... be careful though... people have a bad habit of borrowing this book and forgeting to return it. YES, this book is that GOOD!

This review is from: Painting on Rocks for Kids (Creative Kids) (Paperback)
This is a great book for people who aren't really very good at painting. Of course the ideas, patterns and methods would work for anyone, but it also shows you step-by-step which color to use, what to draw on the rock, etc. The little rock cars and rock town are darling and the lizards are cute and very realistic. This would be a fun summer project to do with your kids!

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Ideas and Simple, July 27, 2008

This review is from: Painting on Rocks for Kids (Creative Kids) (Paperback)
I love this little book, and it will work for ages 8-80! Materials are simple and inexpensive;craft paint, brushes, rocks. There are colorful pictures and easy to follow instructions. The 3-D lizards and "food" rocks are unique, and the mystery eggs are easy for the youngest painters. I collect lots of beach rocks and can see a use for them other than just tossing them into the garden. This would be a wonderful hobby for those who enjoy crafts and don't want to do large paintings. I am now making a "kit" for my nieces for Christmas that will include all the necessary materials and the book.
