Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5-All shapes of hand-sized and smaller rocks are used to create a wide variety of clever and artistic projects. The ideas are grouped into 10 different categories from rock fish through rocky roadsters and rockosaurs. Sharp, full-color photographs placed on a white background and black-and-white, step-by-step directions make the creation of each project clear. These pictures show not only the steps involved, but also which brushes to use, how to hold them, and how to create sharp lines. Captions tell how to mix paints and apply them. Great care has been taken to make each project artistic, imaginative, attractive, and easy to accomplish. Children, camp counselors, teachers, group leaders, and parents looking for challenging and satisfying crafts will find this book outstanding.

About the Author

Lin Wellford is the author of five bestselling books and has painted more then 650 rocks during her career as a "rock artist." She lives in Green Forest, Arkansas.

More About the Author

A small river rock picked up while walking along a creek in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas was the start of a lifelong fascination for artist Lin Wellford. She took it home and painted on a few simple details. The transformation was immediate and amazing. Painting in three dimensions made her little rock rabbit seem to come to life.
After years of painting hundreds more creatures of all kinds, Lin responded to repeated requests for a book that would share her techniques for painting rocks, as well as pointers on how to choose rocks and how to match rock shapes to their perfect subject.
Her first book, The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks, came out in 1994 and immediately became a bestseller. It was followed by a yet more books, each taking on a different subject, including painting flowers and little cottages on rocks, painting rock pets, projects for kids to paint, easy projects for brand new painters, and most recently, a book devoted to painting manufactured stones and edging to turn any outdoor space into a garden gallery.
In addition to her books, Lin was a frequent guest on HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, and has appeared on dozens of national, regional, and local television shows to spread the word about the accessibility and fun of rock painting. She is also the author of The New Grandparents Name Book.

This book is perfect for beginning painters of all ages! Painting on Rocks for Kids could be especially useful for teachers, Scout leaders, youth activity directors and anyone who enjoys helping children explore their own emerging creativity. If you think about it... Rock painting provides an inexpensive and exciting art activity that builds painting skills. If you wanted to... you could even sell them. (like I do!)
Something I like especially in this book are the lizards... they are not shown on the cover of the book but they are the cutest... I would have bought the book even if the only thing it taught you was the lizards... (the lizards really look like they are sitting on the rock! This book is worth several times what Amazon.com is charging. You will love it... be careful though... people have a bad habit of borrowing this book and forgeting to return it. YES, this book is that GOOD!

This is a great book for people who aren't really very good at painting. Of course the ideas, patterns and methods would work for anyone, but it also shows you step-by-step which color to use, what to draw on the rock, etc. The little rock cars and rock town are darling and the lizards are cute and very realistic. This would be a fun summer project to do with your kids!

I love this little book, and it will work for ages 8-80! Materials are simple and inexpensive;craft paint, brushes, rocks. There are colorful pictures and easy to follow instructions. The 3-D lizards and "food" rocks are unique, and the mystery eggs are easy for the youngest painters. I collect lots of beach rocks and can see a use for them other than just tossing them into the garden. This would be a wonderful hobby for those who enjoy crafts and don't want to do large paintings. I am now making a "kit" for my nieces for Christmas that will include all the necessary materials and the book.

Spectacular Book for Budding Artists/Avid Rock Collectors! Finally...something to do with all those rocks my 5- and 7-year old girls (and I) have been collecting! Tips: Use washable paint for the first couple of rocks and younger aspiring painters. Add glitter while the paint is wet if your artist likes things to sparkle. Great idea for a birthday craft and party favor! The best rocks are those found along river beds (dry or wet) because they are very smooth. But any favorite rocks will do (small, medium, large). Adults, grab a rock and do a project next to your child...let your own inner artist out! This will keep you from trying to "help your child do it right." Simply sit next to your child and discover the steps together. If you or your child makes a mistake in the pencil sketching stage, don't get frustrated (yes, I'm talking to the parents too!); simply erase it. If you make a mistake while painting, use a wet Q-Tip or paper towel to remove the washable paint.

If your child is young and is developing hand/eye coordination, this is a great project! Put on a painting smock and some old clothes, give her a pencil, eraser and paint and just let her go! It's messy, so take a deep breath...make it 3 if it goes against the grain to let your kids and their clothes get messy! If you use washable paint, it's much more enjoyable. If your child is older and not too worried about the finished product being perfect, you can use craft paint. A sealer will help the paperweight to last for years. If you're using washable paint, inform the gift recipient so they don't get it wet.

You'll start seeing rocks in a whole new way. Rock collecting has become a favorite fun family activity! Great project for kids of all ages...and I'm 40!

I purchased this for my kids and I give them some step by step directions on rock painting. The price was great however, I would have paid the extra few cents for a book with no water and paint damage. The book had significant water damage (pages were ruffled) and some pages had painted smeared on it. The writing and library markings I could deal with. I personally wouldn't consider this "acceptable" but that is my personal opinion.

This book is so easy to follow and filled with great ideas for kids and adults! I love anything that inspires imagination, creativity and gets kids away from the TV and Internet! So far I have purchased two of them, but plan to pick up a few more as Birthday and Christmas gifts.
