Book Description

August 2000
Painting in miniature involves much more than taking a normal size design and simply reducing it down to fit a small object. Using clear, step-by-step photos and 14 fun-to-paint projects, this book shows the reader how to make and paint designs that work on very small surfaces such as tiny trays, trinket boxes, nesting dolls, broaches, small picture frames, omaments, switchplates and more. Decorative painters learn how to choose patterns that are appropriate for small, curved objects, how to place repeating design elements so they come out evenly, how to adjust motifs such as flowers, ribbons and lace to fit tight curves, and how to adapt one design to fit several different shapes. The projects are painted in acrylics on a wide variety of surfaces that can easily be found in craft stores. Full-page beauty shots, black-and-white patterns, mini-demos and a complete list of materials needed are included.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gordon translates the natural attraction to miniature paintings into modern-day techniques, borrowing from a number of ethnic-specific folk painting crafts--the Russian khokhloma and the Norwegian Hallingdal, to name just two. After an abbreviated foray into supplies, brushes, and prep work, she expends most of her energy and pages on 14 projects, from a compact and comb to faux-gilded candlesticks. Every one includes an all-in-color palette (acrylic paints preferred), list of supplies, patterns to copy, and close-ups of particularly intricate details. Remember, however, that smaller doesn't necessarily mean quick to complete. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!, June 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Painting Tiny Treasures (Paperback)
As I flipped through this book the first time, I stuck post-it notes on the projects that I loved. When I got through, nearly everyone was marked! The pictures that can be scene in Amazon's preview are a very, very small portion of this book. It is packed with great projects and detailed instructions. I truly do not know which one I will do first. Many of the projects do have a Russian flavor, with rich colors on dark backgrounds, as the cover shows, but there are still some that are more Victorian pinks and roses. I am very happy with this book.
