If you love art, but feel intimidated to even try to paint, this book may turn you into an artist. Have you ever looked at a picture and wondered how the use of light and shadow, colors layered upon layers created a stunning picture? Rosalind Cuthbert makes it so easy. When I bought this book I simply wanted to learn how the artists bring life to their paintings. Now that I've delved into it a bit, I'm considering taking up drawing and painting myself.
One would expect a book about painting to have splendid photos and this book does not disappoint us. More than that, the author discusses the painting equipment needed, and breaks down the lessons into six chapters. They are: Basic Techniques, Understanding and Mixing Color, Composing and Painting Still Life, Developing Landscapes and Townscapes, Depicting Water, and Painting figures. There is no substitute for a live art teacher, but Cuthbert's book is the next best thing.

I bought this book because my Neo Impressionistic teacher recommended it. I saw her copy and decided it would be a good addition to my library. It has lots of example photographs and clear dialog. A good reference book for your library.
