Book Description

December 28, 2004

From Hunter Hayes -- one of the most exciting new voicesin African-American fiction -- comes a moving, unforgettable novel of the bold and beautiful chances the heart makes you take.

Smart, sexy Shemone Waters didn't let the very mean streets of Harlem drag her down. But Darnell Williams, her best friend from high school, made one critical mistake -- and was sent to prison because of it.

Now, at twenty-nine, Shemone's on the fast-track up -- a columnist for a hot African-American mag -- and she has little time for romance or danger. But Darnell is coming home to throw her carefully thought-out "ten-year plan" into chaos. Is he a new man ... or just another ex-con back on the streets until another misstep puts him behind bars again? All Shemone knows is this bad boy makes her feel soooo good! And though following her heart could be the biggest mistake she's ever made, this could be love, hot and real. And love's the biggest risk of all ...

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When the "Final Four," Darnell, Terrance, Ohija (formerly Beatrice), and Shemone, graduated from high school, each one followed a different dream. Shemone graduated with a journalism degree from Hampton University; Terrance went pro and played for the Miami Heat; Ohija opened her own specialty shop; and Darnell is in jail. Nine years later, Shemone reaches out to comfort Darnell when Terrance is killed in an automobile accident. Their friendship resumes, and once Darnell is released from prison, he immediately contacts Shemone. They acknowledge feelings for each other and begin to date. Although their relationship is risky, their romance is exhilarating. While Shemone is excelling in her career as a freelance writer, Darnell is struggling to reinvent himself as an ex-offender. As Darnell wrestles with the lure of his former street life, his convictions are tested when he is forced to make a choice that will affect his future--with or without Shemone. This entertaining story follows the plight of a successful African American woman involved with an ex-convict determined to realize his full potential. Lillian Lewis

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Idealistic, February 24, 2003
By A Customer
This book is a good read for young readers or those into hip hop culture. The book is idealistc; however ,it does bring up some good relationship issues as well as awarness to some of the issues African- American women and men face today. This book is a nice read, although it is not for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tastfully Sasy, March 23, 2006

ClassyEOne "ClassAct" (Grand Rapids, MI USA) - See all my reviews
A pair like no otha' is a book about today's black woman. It is a book written with just enough spice and just enough pizzazz. Main character Shemone Waters, a columnist for a leading African American Magazine, has come a long way from the mean streets of Harlem and the ol'skool days of kickin' it with the crew. At the age of twenty-nine Shemone is on top of the world and has developed a taste for the finer things in life. As the master of her territory she has made it her duty to never settle for anything less than 1st class. All this changes though when Beauty is reintroduced to Beast. Best friend from high school Darnell has just been released from prison and friendship isn't at the least all he's looking for. This is a roller-coaster ride that takes the heart for bumpy twists. Who knew that something so bad could feel so good! Shemone may have many reasons to say no to this ex-con but all those reasons register benign when pitted against love. Will love be enough to keep him on the right path or is Shemone just another deterrence until misfortune puts him back on the fast track. Shemone decides to listen to her heart and take a chance with love but is she at all ready for risk and will this decision prove to be the right one?
