More About the Author

Marty is from a family of artists going back several generations. Raised in Santa Barbara, she pursued her creative interests from an early age, settling on the batik technique in the early 60's. From simple pieces the work grew into very detailed paintings earning her a reputation is area galleries as well as in the illustration field. In 1980 she switched to watercolor and pursued opportunities with art publishing firms and has since enjoyed seeing her designs used as book illustration, posters, puzzles, greeting cards, plate designs and calendars. Her primary focus in the last 15 years has been as an illustrator for Dover Publications where she has had 230 books published that include a series of coloring books of many of the famous painters and art movements as well as a variety of design and activity books for artists and children, Marty lives in Anna Maria Florida, where she finds continual inspiration for her current series of photo art prints. Her passion for photography and mastery of computer art programs have enabled her to marry the two in her recent print series depicting the natural beauty of southern Florida

I recently ordered 4 adult coloring books. Of the 4, this Paisley Designs book caught my eye first. I've colored three pictures in this book so far and plan to color many more. I feel the designs are creative and varied. The designs are on both sides of the pages and some have very teeny, tiny details that need to be colored in. A sharp pencil is a must. Because some of the areas are so small, I am considering purchasing a magnifying product for future coloring projects.

At first, I used my old colored pencils, but found it difficult to keep a point on them. I purchased Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils and had a much easier time coloring the tiny spaces that are in some of the designs. I always put a piece of notebook paper directly behind the page I'm coloring to protect those pages. I found that the pressure I use when coloring the page will cause the black ink, used in the book, to transfer onto the pages that are behind the one I'm coloring. The black ink is transferred onto the notebook paper instead, keeping the pages behind the one I'm coloring neater.

I'm having fun with this book and can't wait til I have time to color another picture.

It's absolutely amazing how every time you work on one of these images they come out different, perhaps reflecting your mood.

The Paisley Designs Coloring Book is so much creative fun, adults will adore it. Dover puts out some of the best publications like this. If you're stuck in the house on a rainy day, staying home sick from work, or just looking for some cool coloring fun -- I highly recommend this book!

This book would be great if there was not another picture to color on the back. Each picture should have it owns page with a blank bank. My kids are unable to use markers because it leaks through. Plus you can only hang one side up on the wall so it is useless to have a picture on back.

Wow! Early this year (2012) I decided to get back into coloring, and discovered I am not a "peter pan" but a "Colorist". Whew! What a relief. That allowed me to enjoy this coloring book even more! I purchased it along with 3 others from Dover Publishing, and a very nice set of Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Pencils, which I also highly recommend! The paisleys on each page are unique. I was very impressed with the detail and complexity of each page. A few pages are simpler, or have large white areas as background, which will work for beginners or those still learning to color tiny areas. They're also a break from the more complex pages. I enjoyed coloring in the backgrounds as well as the actual designs, and have done 3 pages so far. Of all the Dover coloring books I've purchased (gotta love that 4 for 3 promotion!), this is one of the 3 or 4 very best 'abstract' type coloring book. I enjoy abstract coloring rather than specific images for many reasons, #1 being the freedom to experiment with color. Yes, I could paint a tree trunk pink if I wanted to, but my more logical side cringes at that wild carelessness with reality. :) There are many opportunities to experiment with color theory, various materials (media-pencils, pens, gel pens, markers, permanent markers, fine line pens, etc.) & color layering/shading. This book will challenge you, whether you are an experienced artist or colorist or a beginner. It would also work for kids old enough to appreciate a challenge, and with the patience to spend several hours on detailed coloring. Each chld is different, so I don't recommend a specific age range, just make sure the child has the necessary fine motor skills, or is working on improving them to avoid a frustrating experience.Read more ›

I am also a grown up that likes to color. The Dover coloring books are really great and very well priced for a quality product. I happen to love the paisley designs - hard to get bored with these shapes. Dover coloring books rule!

This is a great coloring book for adults who want to experiment with colors. I enjoyed being able to use lots of color combinations with many small and large spaces. This was intricate enough to feel a little challenged. I can't draw, so it was fun to color and to exercise my creativity with color.

Love the designs in this book. Unfortunately, you cannot use marker because it bleeds through to the other side of the page. The designs themselves are wonderful.

I purchased this coloring book with the primary intention to develop my own designs for purses I am developing for my business - those with a 1960s-1970s flair. Yes, some are wild, as to be expected, others have a quality that can definitely be modified to fit my needs. Yet, I am also drawn to color them in and by first scanning the images (or I suppose get several more books), I can test color combinations to see what works. It is definitely fun, productive (for my business), and a stress reducer. Marty Noble's Coloring Book lines through Dover are of a higher quality in design and content (few, if any duplicates - interesting patterns - quality paper), but are printed on both sides of the paper. Yet when scanning, the paper is of high quality so the reverse image doesn't come through.

Therefore - great book for the creative designs (artists) and stress reducer (for the coloring book crowd...and it is growing...we are all becoming kids again!).
