5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, happy music!, June 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
I was given the first Oliver Mtukudzi CD - Tuku Music, as a gift and absolutely loved it. It is the type of CD you listen to over and over again without tiring of the music. Thus my expectations were set very high for his new CD - Paivepo and it did not disappoint. The music is happy and uplifting with strong rhythms, instrumentals and vocals. I love the song descriptions in the CD jacket which explain each song's theme.

I'm a big international music fan and have bought many CDs distributed under the Putumayo World Music label. Whoever finds their artists is a genius, you just can't go wrong. Definitely add this one, and any of the others, to your collection.

This is a great album.Since you listen you will go to enjoy an album with caribbean influences ,specially the percusion in the last two tracks, you can appreciate clearly PALOS RHTYTHM ,a dance style from Dominican Republic and Haiti,a rhtythm very very infectious. I am sure that this album will become in an anthological album from african music.

It's amazing what great music does to me. It lifts me up much better than any psychotropic medication could ever do. Putumayo is right. Their music does make me feel good. I own so many of their CDs and I always look forward to new releases. This CD is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever owned. Looks like I'll have to buy Tuku Music now!!

5.0 out of 5 stars music that reverberates in the soul, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
if you never buy another album in your lifetime, you do your soul good by adding this one to your collection. this music wraps the soul in a way that is difficult to articulate. paivepo is absolutely amazing. i first discovered oliver mtukudzi on an african music complitaion--i fell in love with the song "mutserendende", and had to have more. i'm so thrilled that i've added this album to my collection. since i received it in the mail 5 days ago, i've had this album on repeat in my cd player--i don't watch television, so music is my first form of entertainment. you can't get tired of this music--i certainly haven't. "it" lifts, grooves, mourns--all in one. this all-elusive "it" factor that this artis has captured in this incredible album. tuku's voice is divine--i have no doubt he has a transcendent connection to the ultimate source. the music is that powerful.

This music is mellow, yet full of a vitality not usually heard in music today. If you are reading, walking, driving, or just laying in a hammock the sound of Oliver Mtudkudzi makes you feel good. If you like music you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again VekuDande you have done it better than last time, August 31, 2001
This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
This album is just great. Tuku "Samanyanga" has produced a masterpiece which is both a informative and highly danceable. Toita madiro is a beuatiful remake of one of Tuku's earlier songs and everyone is dancing to this piece of ingeniuty. A remake of Dzandimomotera should be able to scale the same heights. This surely is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intoxicating, March 5, 2011
This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
The other reviews do an excellent job, so I will keep it short and sweet.

Oliver Mtukudzi plays absolutely beautiful music. He blends various forms of traditional African music, including the haunting mbira sound. The result has been dubbed Tuku Music. There is something fascinating, addictive, and just delicious about it. Once you scratch the surface, read about the meanings of the songs, and give yourself over to it, you discover a different dimension: the serene beauty of the effervescent melodies juxtaposed with hauntingly beautiful chants, and a voice that tells stories of pain, longing, hope and celebration. And this is something African music does. Be warned. It can bring tears to your eyes.

I am a fan of many types of African music, however, Oliver Mtukudzis music is something I have turned many people on to: it does not matter that you don't speak the language, or are not versed in the background traditions, or African music in general. None of that matters. Turn on the music, give it a chance, and you will be carried away. And you can play this as you drive, alone in your room, at parties: I would be so bold as to say it can be played anywhere, anytime, from weddings to funerals, for kids and the elderly. And everyone loves it when they listen to it.

It will also send you on a quest for more Zimbabwean music. That will be fun, and extremely enriching.

I am even listening now as I type this review. Olver Mtukudzis music is now a part of who I am, I hope it becomes a part of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A desert-island disc from a mature Zimbabwean singer, August 13, 2010
This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
Intentionally or unintentionally, every artist conveys himself through his art. Oliver Mtukudzi's gravelly-edged voice suggests a man who has seen his share of trouble and heartache. Yet on "Paivepo," he gives us a collection of mostly upbeat Zimbabwean songs expressing the viewpoint of a mature man looking at the world with compassion and enthusiasm. This interplay between sound and music is captivating, his musicians are first-rate (especially the lead guitar) and the entire album maintains the idiom of south African light jazz. The opening track, "Pindurai Mambo," sets the tone with an infectious melody that had my kids and me listening over and over as we traveled through Yosemite National Park a decade ago. To this day, it is one of their favorite albums, though one of them is in graduate school and the other in college. Near the end of the disc, Mtukudzi reveals his more contemplative side with "Ndine Mubvunzo" ("I Have a Question"). I am sure he has many questions, and will keep a careful watch to listen to him ask them. Do not pass up the essential disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another side of Mtukudzi, June 16, 2006

This review is from: Paivepo (Audio CD)
While "Tuku Music" is earthy, this album is lighter in tone. This is joyful;some hear Carribean influences in it,such as soukous.

"Paivepo" does mention darker themes of AIDS,but it also uses lighthearted parables to teach lessons.Mtukudzi's singing is as beautiful&powerful as ever."Paivepo" isn't a sophomore slump compared to "Tuku Music";it's only different.Oliver Mtukudzi's albums are worth collecting;there's not a single weak song in them.
