4.0 out of 5 stars Doris Day leads cast in lively film verson of Broadway hit

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mono Sound
As others have noted, the main choice here is between Janis Paige and Doris Day. Doris Day has the better voice but the Broadway CD has better sound, and added songs. Take your pick. I recall the LP version of this soundtrack being in Stereo so it was disappointing indeed to hear that the tracks here are in Mono, and not all that well recorded even for the time...

4.0 out of 5 stars Doris Day leads cast in lively film verson of Broadway hit, February 8, 2004
This review is from: The Pajama Game (Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Your choice between the original Broadway cast and the movie soundtrack depends largely on your preference for either Janis Paige on the former and Doris Day on the latter.

Day sings it better, however the Broadway cast album has better sound as well as an overture and three songs, "A New Town is a Blue Town", "Her Is" and "Think of the Time I save" were dropped from the movie.

The soundtrack album, however, includes extended dance music from "I'll Never Be Jealous again" and "Once-a-year-day" and despite the boxy Warner Bros soundtage sound, the music is given a lively performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's About Time!, July 17, 2001

Finally, things are happening in terms of musicals! First we get the DVD version of The Pajama Game which is very fine indeed, and now the long-awaited CD soundtrack. Considering the recording was made in 1957, the sound of this CD is acceptable. At times the recording sounds a little harsh, but the music, songs, and singing are so good that one's ear easily adapts. Doris Day and John Raitt are in their prime and sing beautifully, but so does the rest of the supporting cast. If you love the movie you must own this soundtrack. I only hope "Calamity Jane" (another Doris Day musical) becomes available soon on DVD and CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Energy To Burn, July 30, 2006

I know that the revival of "The Pajama Game" is a hit-of-the-moment on Broadway, but I still recommend that fans of the revival check out the soundtrack to the 1957 film version of the show. Warner Brothers treated the property in a more respectful manner than was the norm and even imported most of the New York to Hollywood to recreate their roles "in perpetuity." The new addition was box office magnet Doris Day who had already proven in "Calamity Jane" that she could bring rambunctuous charm to the musical. Hearing Day and John Raitt putting "There Once Was A Man" through its paces can still send a shiver down my aging spine.

THE PAJAMA GAME was successfully turned into a hit film starring Doris Day and the bulk of the original Broadway cast (almost unheard-of in Hollywood musicals). The original soundtrack album is a pure joy, and has now been reissued on the Collectables (Sony Special Markets) label.

Doris Day fits perfectly into the role of feisty Babe Williams (Janis Paige played the role on Broadway. Ironically, Day and Paige's careers intertwined several times. They co-starred in ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS, which was Day's movie debut and later played together in PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES). Day's voice fits the music of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross to a tee, and she's especially fetching belting out the anthemic "I'm Not at All in Love".

John Raitt, repeating his Broadway role of the hardnosed superintendent Sid Sorokin, is wonderful, singing the show's beloved ballad "Hey There" and the country-flavoured duet with Doris Day, "There Once Was a Man".

Eddie Foy Jr., Reta Shaw and Carol Haney, all from the Broadway cast, perform with joy and showmanship. Standout numbers include "Once-a-Year Day", "Steam Heat" and "I'll Never Be Jealous Again".

Included as a bonus is "The Man Who Invented Love", a song written and later cut from the film version, recorded by Doris Day with Frank DeVol and his orchestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pajama Game Movie Soundtrack, March 16, 2007
This review is from: The Pajama Game (Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Love love love this CD. I am so glad the movie version of Pajama Game with Doris Day came out. I have been a fan of this movie since we did the musical when I was in high school in 1980. The movie soundtrack is so much better than the Broadway Recording. Janis Paige just doesn't sing as well as Doris Day. I highly recommend this CD if you are a fan of musicals and Doris Day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mono Sound, October 1, 2011

As others have noted, the main choice here is between Janis Paige and Doris Day. Doris Day has the better voice but the Broadway CD has better sound, and added songs. Take your pick. I recall the LP version of this soundtrack being in Stereo so it was disappointing indeed to hear that the tracks here are in Mono, and not all that well recorded even for the time. Checking the movie online it says mono soundtrack so maybe it was never recorded in stereo. On the other hand, WB's other film from the same composers, Damn Yankees was recorded in stereo, 1958, but not so released until the CD version came out, so if there is a stereo version of the soundtrack it would be nice if they would release it.

Great soundtrack to the classic film. I essentially bought this for Hernando's Hideaway and I'll Never Be Jealous Again, but there are so many other great songs as well.

First, I received the CD from the vendor in good condition. It is a collection of songs from the Broadway Musical The Pajama Game as presented in the movie of the same name, starring Doris Day and John Riatt. Again, I have owned this music on vinyl, and cassette, and own the movie on VHS and DVD.
