More About the Author

Alan first began travelling in earnest in the early 1980s when he set off around the shores of the Mediterranean with little money in his pocket but with an archaeological trowel in hand. He spent much of the next three years drifting between excavations and picking up casual work as he found it along the way. By the end of the '80s his horizons had extended to Central Asia where his passion for trekking first germinated. These early experiences, of archaeology and trekking, would later combine to shape his contributions to two Insight Guides, "Pakistan" (First edition 1990) and "The Silk Road" (2008).
Alan first visited Morocco during the death-throes of the Hippie era, while on his Eurorail year, towards the end of the 1970s. He began trekking in the Atlas Mountains nearly a decade later, now some 25 years ago. Since then he has returned to Morocco many times and has trekked extensively in both the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains. On this basis, he successfully approached Trailblazer Publications with a proposal to write "Moroccan Atlas - The Trekking Guide" (2010). Alan continues to return to Morocco often where he keeps himself busy by exploring new routes for inclusion in the forthcoming second edition.

Extensively researched one gets the full impression of the vast nation that is Pakistan. All the varied regions, races, peoples, and languages come alive in this impressive volume. With a history as ancient as that of Mesopotamia and Egypt, modern Pakistan's history isn't merely an extension of India, but appears as a crossroads between the Mideast and South Asia. Many fought to gain a foothold in Pakistan including: Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Sikhs, and lastly the Anglo-Indians of the British Empire. The sharp contrasts between rich and poor, old and new, and the struggles of the varied population to maintain an identity come alive. All you need is this excellent guide and you can navigate Pakistan like a native!

Apart from the scary, unappeasing cover, the book is nice. Good addition to keep out to see and browse for the wonderful pictures. Another great thing are the sidenotes that are quite informative and detailed. The maps are GREAT, albiet slightly less detailed. There are no walking or trekking maps within this guide.

I would have preferred more details on each area. For example more detailed itineraries, or walking itineraries. Also, no trekking information is available in the text. No info on Kashmir in this one either!

An okay book. I rather prefer the other guidebook "Pakistan Handbook". Less pictures in that one, but much more details.

Excellent guide to the country. Good descriptions and a perfect help for a possible tourist. For me, a perfect reminder of a magnificent trip to Lahore, Kashmir, the Himalaya, the Hindu Kush and the Karakoram in July 2009. I hope that it may still be of use to many future tourists.
