Nusrat in Peak Form, June 30, 2004
This review is from: Pakistan: Vocal Art of Sufis 2 (Audio CD)
This ranks as my favorite Nusrat CD. The songs are great (though I usually skip the light and happy track #2), and the sound is perfect, with just a little natural reverb. Every vocal and instrument voice is perfectly mixed. My only complaint revolves around the too-brief "alap" sections. I would enjoy more time to savor the clashing harmonies before the tabla fell into the mix. Still, that complaint is almost irrelevant; it's one of the very finest Nustrat CDs still available. Vol. I is pretty darn good too.

Best Nusrat Recording Ever - Out of Print, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Pakistan: Vocal Art of Sufis 2 (Audio CD)
After Nusrat's passing, the market was flooded with 3rd rate recordings of him. Where before he may have had dozens of albums available, now suddenly there were hundreds. 99% of the were crap! I stumbled upon this recording in the early 90s at Tower Records. I had a great stereo setup at home - for a 20+ year old. Sony amp with Polk Audio speakers and a Pioneer CD player. When I put this CD into the player and started listening, I was floored! My first CD was purchased in 1985, so I'm not new to the technology. But I was new to the recording technology used to produce this CD.
It still stands to this day as one of the best recordings (Qawwali or not) ever! There are a few recordings that I would rank up there - Dire Straits, "Brothers in Arms" and Sting, "...Nothing Like the Sun".
Be prepared though, this is no ordinary recording. Normally, the primary singer is the focal point; equally distributed in left and right speakers to create a central sound. If you're wearing headphones, singers typically sound like they're in front of you - in the "middle". In this recording, Nusrat is sitting to the left, as he often did on stage. The sound mix represents this stage presence! So, you'll get Nusrat coming mainly out of the left speaker, with additional singers to the right and tabla in the middle. It takes some getting time to adjust, but you'll appreciate it...trust me! The best song, in my opinion, is "Haqq Ali Ali" - it's one of his more famous tracks, but this recording is unusual because of the 2+ minute intro and patient pace of the song. There are dozens of versions of this out there, but nothing compares to this.
It's no longer in print, so you'll have to buy it from 3rd party sellers. But it's worth every penny - try to buy new.
