Book Description

September 30, 1997 0275947378 978-0275947378
This study provides an overview of Pakistan's experience with economic reforms, looking at key elements in the reforms, implementation problems, the handling of potential difficulties, and how Pakistan's reforms compare with those undertaken in other parts of the developing world. After examining the reforms themselves, the study analyzes their impact on the economic freedom of the average Pakistani. Attention is then focused on reforms in the country's major economic sectors: manufacturing, agriculture, finance, transport, and telecommunications. Of particular importance is an examination of the benefits likely to stem from the country's privatization program. The study concludes with a series of policy simulations to the year 2000. Of unique interest to scholars and policymakers is that these reforms have been implemented in an Islamic setting.

“This volume is a welcome addition to the scanty literature on the 1991 economic reforms in Pakistan...useful for graduate students in economic development in general and Pakistan in particular. Helpful statistical information and valuable bibliography are included.”–Choice

“Looney's book is yet another contribution to the development literature which investigate in particular the role of the state in economic development....Policy makers, development practitioners, as well as students of development will be benefitted enormously by Looney's analyses.”–Journal of Third World Studies

“...recommended to South Asian specialists in economics and politics.”–Review of Radical Political Economics
