Book Description

Guides August 1, 2001
In spring 1939, as the prospect of war loomed, a joint Greek-American archaeological expedition began excavation on the hill of Epano Englianos, high above the modern town of Pylos in southwest Greece. Almost immediately more than 600 tablets bearing inscriptions in Linear B script were uncovered, as well as stone walls, fragments of frescoes, and stucco floors. The discoveries were kept secret during the war years and it was only in 1952 that the project could return to uncover, over 15 seasons, the Mycenaean building now know as the Palace of Nestor. This beautifully illustrated color guide surveys the buildings and objects discovered and reconstructs life in the citadel and its associated tombs. It also describes the surrounding landscape, using evidence uncovered by the Pylos Regional Archaeology Project which surveyed the wider area around the palace between 1992 and 1995.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good For What it is, July 10, 2011
By
This review is from: A Guide to the Palace of Nestor, Mycenaean Sites in Its Environs, and the Chora Museum (Guides) (Paperback)
This very brief book is an abbreviation of Blegen's larger books designed for visitors to the site. It has some very fine photos and covers everything a visitor would need to know. Especially fine are some recreations of what the citadel would have looked like in Mycenaean times. While these paintings are quite good any visitor will notice that the depictions of the men are too small. The rooms are nowhere near as big as they appear in these paintings. The actual photographs are very good and show the site in all its glory. One thing that any visitor will notice is that the photos were all taken before the site was roofed in the 1960s. They look remarkably good for photos of that age.

There are several maps included including one of the site itself. The rooms of the building are all touched upon as well as the various sites around. This is quite good since the sites themselves are not exactly easy to find in person. The importance of these sites and all the artifacts is explained as well. There is quite a bit on what has been learned from these materials and their significance. The abridgement into a pamphlet was done by the authors themselves so it hasn't been mangled by a poor editor. So basically this book is extremely good as a tour book (which is why I bought it) or an introduction to the site of Pylos. If you want to read a more detailed book on this site then you should find the unabridged books.
