Book Description

January 2001
In 1782, when Bangkok became the new capital of Siam, King Rama I, the founder of the present Chakri dynasty, at once set abour recreating the glory of the old capital, Ayutthaya, with its beautiful temples and golden palaces. This is a study of the palaces built by the Chakri dynasty. The vast complex he constructed, known as the Grand Palace, covers an area of 61 acres. The succeeding 200 years also saw some 100 other palaces constructed in and around Bangkok. Initially built in traditional Thai style using wood, these palaces were soon replaced by masonry buildings in a diversity of styles, from Thai and Chinese to Western as Siam became more open to the influence of the West.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and well-illustrated, July 25, 2008
This review is from: Palaces of Bangkok: Royal Residences of the Chakri Dynasty (Hardcover)
In contrast to the previous reviewer, I found this book extremely informative. I was trying to find out more about the mural paintings in the Muk Krasan Cheuam, a portico between the Phra Thinang Phaisan Thaksin and the Ho Phra Sulalai Phiman of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It's not easy to find published information about such a specific part of the immense palace compound, but this book not only had extensive descriptions of both the latter buildings, it even had a photograph providing a glimpse of the paintings I'm researching. It's not easy to find good pictures of the Grand Palace outside of coffee table books, but this volume is much more detailed and helpful than most other coffee table books. [Disclaimer: I'm using the 1996 first edition. It is the same length, at 368 pages, as the 1997 edition featured here, so I'm assuming there are no substantial differences.]

This book is a disappointment. I was expecting better text and more information. It is overpriced.
