Book Description

July 6, 2006
Stretching across the Bay of Naples and at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, Naples is home to numerous palaces, estates and grand residences. Though some palaces have been abandoned or damaged, many have been restored to their historical glory. In the midst of this modern, vibrant, multicultural city, these remnants of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italian aristocracy remain. Through glorious colour photography and illuminating text, Palaces of Naples tells the stories behind these fascinating and fabulous homes. Thirty estates and palaces are featured here, each with their own style and story. From the famous portico of the Palazzo Filomarino to the mirrored walls and inlay figures of the eighteenth-century duke's study in the Palazzo Corigliano, the architectural details of the palaces are examined. In addition, the intriguing stories and rumours behind the homes are retold - such as the reported ghost sightings, mysterious wails and blue lights emanating from the Palazzo Donn-Anna, left half-built

5.0 out of 5 stars Palaces of Naples, July 10, 2000
This review is from: Palaces of Naples (Hardcover)
When you read about art and architecture in Italy, you learn a lot about Rome, Florence, Pisa, Milan, Venice... and just a minor reference to Naples. Only as a stepping stone to reach Capri or Ischia. I lived in Naples several months last year. And I've been looking for more information on arts and architecture since I came back to the States. Finally, I found this book in the Rizzoli bookstore in Pasadena, California. Awsome! The first impresion I had was the Capella Sansevero in the cover!!! That little chapel is an incredible piece of art, hidden in a small street in the Medieval part of town. Hard to find, but once you are there, you ask why this is not shown as one of the major works of art in the entire Italy!!!. The "Veiled Christ" sculpture worth a trip to Italy. You can walk in front of some of these palaces, not being aware of the richness of its interiors. Some of them are not open to the public, or are just one more apartment building in the city. And this book allowed me to visit inside and outside some of the "palazzi" that I've seen just driving by and wondering what was that building. A lot of excellent pictures, some of the most famous buildings, such il "Palazzo Reale" or the "Museo Capodimonte", and another palaces almost forgotten and in not a very good condition, such the "Alberghi dei Poveri". Thank you Donatella for this book -another Neapolitan piece of art- and thank you Mark for your photos. Again, this is a very valuable contribution for the whole world to learn about the arts and architecture in Naples.
