Book Description

June 1, 2004

“Mix together one pinch of surrealism, one pinch of ‘situationalism,’ stir in a large measure of poetry, quite a bit of talent and you will get a glittering novel of intelligence and humor.”—Révolution

Eric Chevillard’s third novel of 11, Palafox explores the ecosystem of an unclassifiable yet enchanting protean creature. A team of “experts” armed with degrees of higher learning is determined to label, train, baptize and realize the elusive creature, while Palafox—driven by his own interior logic and flanked by another dimension—effortlessly and wordlessly defies them all. Chevillard’s visionary play (of word and thought) has been compared to the work of Beckett, Michaux and Pinget, yet the universe he spins is utterly his own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Chevillard's best, but close, February 23, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Palafox (Paperback)
I enjoyed this novel very much, but it was bound to pale next to Chevillard's Crab Nebula. The abrupt transitions are not so surprising or funny. But there's enough clever language play and humor for anyone. A group of naturalists and neighbors tries to classify, domesticate and exploit the changeable Palafox, who confounds all of their plans and expectations, sometimes violently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy, January 27, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Palafox (Paperback)
An amusing romp through French society, this book uses the device of a creature of infinite morphability. A thread of devestating characterisation runs through this book tying it together neatly. All the scenes combine to lead to a clever climax.
