Book Description

March 1, 2011
In Pale & Interesting, stylist Atlanta Bartlett and designer Dave Coote reveal their passion for decorating with a muted palette of subtle shades. The look combines their creative approach with the reality of busy family life, resulting in a stylish yet comfortable home that's easy to live in and easy on the eye. Atlanta and Dave start by taking a look at the design philosophy behind the look: Keep it Simple, Keep it Relaxed and Keep it Real. Next, in Putting It All Together, they map out the key elements of the look: Shades of Pale; Texture & Form; Mixing it Up; Waste Not, Want Not and Collecting. Finally The Rooms, takes a tour throughout the home, revealing how easy and enjoyable it is to live with chalky pastels, earthy natural tones, understated neutrals and muted vintage shades. Pale & Interesting shows how to tap into the look and draw on your own individual taste to create a fresh, light and airy home that's a joy to live in, every single day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pale and very interesting March 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Got my copy tonight and had a hard time putting this down. This is a solid representation of several "styles" of decorating, under the common theme of "pale". Far from being dull, harsh, or hard to live with, the book presents many lovely photos of real homes -- ones you can imagine actual people living in. It fits in nicely with the current trend (craze?) for reusing, recycling, and re-purposing. I think I'll find myself turning to this on a regular basis -- not just for home design, but to inspire other endeavors.

Not worth the money. Multiple photos of the same six rooms in one large book. No imagination. Do not waste your money

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice accents December 27, 2011
By J. Ford
Format:Hardcover
I could never live with so much white, but I still found inspiration in this book. I like the use of older not-so -perfect accent pieces to bring character to a room and warmth to a cool pallet. I bought this book to get some ideas for neutralizing my home before I put it on the market, but I'll probably keep it around for awhile and maybe use some ideas in my next house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Pale May 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
In this book, Atlanta Bartlett and her husband Dave Coote prove that having a white palette doesn't limit you to a feminine, floral look. Their images achieve the perfect balance of industrial and romantic/country. The book includes many homes that I hadn't seen before in magazines or other books, and offers many ideas for upcycling. I think that this look is very modern even though it harks back to the past. A beautiful book with a clever title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Relaxed, and Real October 11, 2011
By michele
Format:Hardcover
LOVELY and SMART. If you're drawn to understated interiors and subtle sophisticated style like me, this is an excellent title to add to the library. Loving Bartlett's creed to keep it simple, keep it relaxed, and keep it real and how the authors manage to illustrate this throughout the book. My kind of photography too: dreamy and soulful. The designers have an effortlessly elegant style and weave clever suggestions through PALE AND INTERESTING which inspired this non-designer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, I don't know what to say... So boring... April 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't know why I persist buying books by Atlanta Bartlett, probably because the cover is always gorgeous, the pictures inside are nice, and certainly because I love Shabby Chic by Rachel Ashwell, and there is a kind of similarity... That is my point : it is so much copied on Rachel Ashwell, that it is becoming really very embarrassing.
We had "Easy Elegance", another way to say "Shabby Chic", now it's "Pale and Interesting"... What's next ? Even the "Relaxed Home", that I got of course, already made me wondering what was going on with this Atlanta and Shabby Chic.
The difference is that Rachel Ashwell is alive, well there, such a personality and creativity, that you get to know her, you recognize right away what is Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic style or not, Couture or not Couture, whatever... I've read three books by Atlanta Bartlett and I still don't get it : I don't understand who she is, everything is so anonymous and cold, she gives rules in decoration, like if someone else was making them. For example : she doesn't "like something", but "in pale and interesting we do like that". Why ? Who decides ? Who are you ? Who is hidden behind this weird name ?
It's also difficult to believe that actual people are living in rooms shown there. And I can't understand how the two same cushions are displayed in two different homes, what a coincidence ! They tried to make so-called "studios" a little messier, to give more reality to these rooms, but seriously, did you see my own studio ? I can tell you : it doesn't look like that, and I really try !
To be honest, I am not even at the end of this book, I am forcing myself to finish it and I precise : I am passionate about decoration and design. But it is written by such a boring way, I have the feeling that ghosts are behind all this.
