5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!, May 28, 2002

This CD is great! So many artists out there nowdays just repackage previously recorded songs, but Pali is comprised mostly of original compositions. The duo has a diverse selection of styles...slack key, traditional & contemporary Hawaiian music; and all of it sounds great!

Their original songs are very catchy & before you know it, you're singing along (my 4 year-old son even sings along). Their version of a classic Hawaiian song, "Wahine 'Ilikea" is hauntingly beautiful...gave me chicken skin the first time I listened to it.

This CD is bound to be a classic! I'm already looking forward to their next release!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff! A must buy for Hawaiian/World music fans!, May 8, 2002

Take Hawaiian greats such as the Sunday Manoa, Olomana, Ka'au Crater Boys and Hapa and combine them with Contemporary giants such as Extreme (of "more than words" fame), Loggins & Messina, Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash... the result is PALI. I've seen them perform in a number of gigs and got to talk to them afterward. After buying their CD and listening to it, I can honestly say... these guys have "it."

From traditional Hawaiian to soulful English ballads, from uptempo ukulele ripping to bada$$ instrumentals, this album has it all. Two major things of note....
1. no jawaiian here! finally!!!
2. they wrote most of the stuff on here!!!
All in all, one of the best CDS to come out in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly suggested! Ono-ono music, September 5, 2002

You ever see a movie that was *so* good, you had to tell everyone you know about it?

It is really hard to classify this CD. While there are pop elements on here, there are also folk, Hawaiian (in Hawaiian) and various grooves on the CD that make it hard to classify this in a purely "World music" category.

I took a chance on this CD and am happy to report that it delivers, and then some. There are 12 songs on this disc, 9 of which were written by the duo. All of the songs shine in arrangement, vocals/harmonies and in musicianship. As someone that used to play guitar, it's apparent that these guys have some serious chops too. Even though they're playing acoustic guitars, they really let their musical muscles flex while complimenting their vocal abilities. There are some Hawaiian songs on here, sung in Hawaiian (I guess that's what gets them in the "world music category"). Even though I couldn't understand a word of it, the songs are pretty elegant and very soothing.

I've had it for a couple of weeks now, and it's still in my CD player-where it will reside. I highly suggest this CD for anyone looking for great music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good on the CD, but best live, August 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pali (Audio CD)
Purchased the CD only after seeing the act. Gave CD 4 stars because it pales in comparison. Directly juxtaposed w/ their live performance, the CD seems a little overproduced on some songs (I didn't understand why; their natural voices are just great--really earnest and sweet), but is still one of the best Hawaiian music debut albums I've heard in a long time. You can really hear the influences (Ka'au Crater Boys, Olomana), although the original music is lovely. Great harmonies, and soothing voices, even though there is some synth-string cliche here and there. No biggie, though. Liked the interpretation of "Wahine", as well. If you've never heard contemporary Hawaiian music, this is probably a pleasant, addictive way to begin. Unlike some other Hawaiian music CDs, you don't have to know the background story or have a "taste" for Hawaiian music to appreciate the CD. And if you already like contemporary Hawaiian music, this is one of those CDs that just seem natural to get. I think it's a nice addition to a collection, which is part of why I bought it. My humble recommendation: CD is definitely worth the money, but RUN to see them perform. Quite a few of their performances are free right now (at least the ones I've been to), but I doubt any will be free much longer. Am looking forward to their second CD already. Would love to see more artistic stretching in the future, although if the next CD has more original music of the same quality, would definitely purchase it.

I've had this for 3 days now and I listen to it every night! This CD is one of those rare albums where all the songs are beautiful! You can feel the passion in each song - whether it's the power of the instrumental "Love..." that will make you reminisce a lifetime of emotions, or the celebration of life in "Tropical Island Day". Hoping for a second CD to come out!

5.0 out of 5 stars By far, one of the BEST World Music/Contemporary CDs...., May 20, 2002
This review is from: Pali (Audio CD)
Hi there,

I was in Hawaii on vacation a month or so ago and I got to see them perform. The CD wasn't out yet, but these guys were SO good live (and so very humble and friendly), I ordered it online after it was released.

Hands down, the best that world music and contemporary stylings have to offer. Yes, its classified as a Hawaiian CD, but its got so much more than that. Their singing and musicianship is top notch. My favorite song on the cd, FOR YOU. The whole thing is great, but if you just needed convincing of how good these guys are, check out FOR YOU.

There's something on this CD for everyone! Ku'u Aloha and Ku'u Lei Nani are my favorite, even though I loved every single song. Their English songs kick but too. These guys know just what kind of upbeat rhythyms get you going and use their ballads to slowly put you in the right kind of mood. I'd recommend to anyone to buy this CD! You won't regret that you did!
