Such good writing, such good acting, this is the best cop show around.

The first 2 eps this season were great - but turning the reins over to Jeff Goldblum for LOCI "light" and "fluffy" doesn't do it for this long-term fan.

Vincent D'Onofrio is irreplaceable in my opinion but Goldblum is another of my favourite actors so i'm fine really.

Much as I expected, this show is now a mishmash of recasting and it shows. Jeff Goldblum and the villain do OK in this episode. The villain, an Irish mob boss in a seaside community, is the best part of the episode. He is pivotal to a cop killing in the community where the evidence shows that there are some dirty cops. Where the show has gone seriously amiss, however, is in recasting the female detective, now played by Saffron Burrows. She adds nothing to this show. If she is the producer's answer to Eames, Dick Wolf must have gone deaf, dumb and blind. Mary Elizabeth Mastrioantonnio replaces Eric Bosogian. Again,a woefully inadequate replacement. This show's only hope, in my opinion, is to focus on Goldblum and the absolute best actors to play villains. That interplay might be enough. There is also one other possibility. Bring in a female actor to replace Burrows who is the caliber of Glen Close, DAMAGES, or Christine Lahti, on Law & Order SVU briefly this year. Stick Goldblum with one of these powerhouses and there might be life injected into this show. Otherwise, it is now on life support.

Update; A month after posting this review IMDB noted online that Jeff Goldblum quit this show. I am not surprised. The absurd things he was supposed to do for this character, as noted below, must have been very trying for him, not to mention the blocks of wood supporting cast. What follows is the review I posted after viewing the last episode.

For the 15 prior episodes we have watched Jeff Goldblum attempt to "pscyh out" his suspects after telling them both of his parents are psychiatrists. On the 16th episode, we finally see it done right. That is, when the suspect is someone who is obviously quite insane, Goldblum brings in his father as a consultant and has him work on the suspect with his actual skills while Goldblum solves the case instead. This is not a half bad premise for a series: a father and son team with one being a shrink and the other a detective, both of them solving crimes. Certainly, neither of the women in this show would be missed as the shrink father replaced them. The shrink father actor was pretty good and a very nice foil for Goldblum. He had a lot of interesting tics and reminded me a bit of Monk.

VDO's Goren was much more watchable but Jeff Goldblum is intentionally hard to swallow. His bizarre hair dye and acting style that is less zany Jeff Goldblum of yore and more designed to frustrate the audience. And Season 9 is definitely frustrating to watch. Even if you believe that this is all meant to be, it's not so easy to take. Basically, all the episodes are full of crap and bald-faced misdirection and with one nugget of truth about the ongoing war. I think Goren who grew up in the neighborhood populated with Holocaust survivors is the working class childhood of people trying to survive trauma whereas Nichols is the more successful silver spoon Manhattan edition. Their common ancestry is never discussed on the show. This season has a godawful Holocaust episode and then the super terrible, eye-rolling inducing Palimpsest episode with Milli Avital. I wanted a chewier Mandy-like successor to Goren and then I discovered it had already been done BY Mandy himself on Criminal Minds. This successor is the opposite of what I was hoping for and is less obvious and much much sharper than I was expecting. The more terrible the episode (Palimpsest!) the balder the terrible truth. Annhilation to steal real estate. Jealousy and sadism, sure. But greed prevailing. That's the reason for the Rainbow Brite awfulnes of the Palimpsest episode. Anyone who watches the L&O franchise to decompress is S-O-L with this season of Criminal Intent. The show is being ruined by the overly loud score.

Always great themes and simply loved the performance of Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe. I had hoped for this series to continue as "Special Units".

I have loved this series since the beginning, as I have loved all the L&O series. This episode is truly awful. The acting is not believable, and I don't know if the writers are having to aim low because Mr. Goldblum can't remember his lines or what. The writing caliber has taken a complete nose-dive. The premise, which I won't divulge here, is such a bad knock-off of excellent British mystery TV that the producers felt it important to make the direct connection by having Goldblum's character actually travel to London for no purpose whatsoever (except to chat with a character named "Woman" who looks so much like Saffron Burrows' character in "My Own Worst Enemy" that it becomes extremely distracting - it's not Ms. Burrows, but I kept wondering if the producers were trying to save money). And Ms. Burrows is a better actress than what she's given here - in this episode, there's the palpable feeling of her saying to herself, "How did I get here?"

I loved the opening on this episode where the question of good versus evil behavior is addressed & unequivocally evil behavior is called out as such. The investigative team to include Jeff Goldblum is second to none. Goldblum calls to attention questionable aspects of a story or character in compelling fashion & in this episode, helped a criminal see the error of his ways & come back to terms with his true identity, the good one versus the one that had fallen to a course of evil. What a moving commentary on human behavior, our potential compulsion to destructive behavior, and, perhaps, our chance at redemption in knowing ourselves.
