Well designed - Maintains attractive form factor!,

Modem works well. Simple to use and attractively designed. Palm V + modem still fits in the shirt pocket (albeit less comfortably than before). Wish they had designed a case that could be enlarged to encompass (and not) the attached modem. All in all, extremely pleased...

Great! And here's the info for GSM adapters,
This review is from: PalmOne V Modem (Office Product)
This modem is light, small, and truly great. It's fast, and the software is excellent. I highly recommend it, if you need to send/receive faxes or e-mail, or connect to the web from your Palm V.ABOUT THE GSM ADAPTER: They sell those at the 3Com palm site. I don't know if they have them here at Amazon. This adapters are very inexpensive, and they have a variety of these for different phones. The adapter comes with the software to configure the modem. The adapters have worked great for me!

Do not buy this Modem - Palm does not support it,

Where do I start? Instructions are poor and sparce. The phone number you call for modem hookup is in Madison Wisconsin. And its not toll Free!!! Expect to be connected with someone who does not understand English who will ask you (after holding for 30 minutes) if you have read the instructions. In all honesty, buy the minstel wireless modem. Don't make my mistake. They're service can't be worse and it can be used from anywhere. This is an honest review. The representative has said 4 times now that he will help (and had put me on hold). How can they not understand the product that they manufactured. Bottom Line...palm V is an excellent unit. The modem, however, is a waste of money. Do not buy it!

it works, but it is not really fast...,

It works, it simply works. I can pick up my pop email from any location with an analog phone connection. (watch out, many offices have digital phone systems, which will not like this little modem) And I can also send my pop email with some freeware available out there. So all in all a great product. I can even just peek on the server to see if any relevant email is waiting out there, or if it is spam and spam again. (i am using a commercial software for this feature, so be prepared to spend a bit more money) It is nice to sit in a hotel room somewhere far from home and to read email on your little palm V (or better Vx)... it feels like working on the very first macintosh. It is all very cute, and all the words in the emails seem really important. Hmm, but there must be other solutions. I could think of wireless solutions, or solutions which would use a cellphone as a wireless modem. (look ma, no wires)... This modem is a cute solution for the wired traveler. Emails feel very fuzzy and warm. And you can write them anywhere and then send them off from almost anywhere. Oh, and before i forget, yes, you can also surf the web. (using some other commercial software which is listed in the manual). Hmm, surfing the web on a palm is a completely different story. It just does not feel right. Amazon actually is quite surfable, but many other sites are not. It feels a bit like leaving the house but never crossing any streets. Not quite there yet, it seems. :*) Get it, if you insist. :*) I am keeping mine. I like it.

Thin, light, uses inexpensive batteries (AAA). Software is a dream; plug it in, press one button and you HotSync to your desktop from anywhere. Well worth it.Does anyone know where to get the GSM upgrade kit so you can use this with a cellphone or digital wireless phone?

Palm modem,

I bought one of these, and it functioned perfectly in terms of electronics. What neither the modem manual nor Palm manual itself tells you explicitly is that there is a need for connecting software--something called multimail pro--if it is to be effective in connecting to such fairly common systems as a unix system at a university, for example, and that even after connecting to such a system--if it connects properly with an older software system like Pine--is that it is difficult to maneuver in something like Pine with the limited keyboard on the Palm Pilot. After checking on Deja Com with some folks in the same boat, I was advised to give up the whole thing and try something called the "Backflip," essentially an acoustic modem that attaches to the palm pilot and goes directly to your e-mail address. I looked at that, then decided that I would still need a keyboard to enter return messages on the Palm Pilot. My eye fell then on the Sharp TM-20, an acoustic coupler of the same sort, but with a fine little keyboard. It is made for retrieving e-mail away from home. Voila, the answer to my problem--I am returning the Palm Pilot modem, keeping my fine Palm Pilot, and moving to the simple solution for E-mail away from home--that is the acoustic coupler TM-20 with its keyboard, and the Palm Pilot for phone numbers and scheduler. The combination is working just fine for me. The TM-20 was up and running in twenty-five minutes.

The Palm V modem is a nice tool to have for someone who travels alot and doesn't feel like lugging around or booting up a laptop to check email. You get 33.6 KB speed and it runs off 2 AAA batteries (or optional adapter if you can find one). Do yourself a favor, download the free Eudora Palm Internet Suite for the top-notch email client. The Eudora email client is better than the Palm Mail app and you can upload messages to your Eudora desktop version. The whole dial-up and logon procedure takes less than a minute. I use Earthlink and found the setup to be quick and painless. However, browsing the web with my Palm Vx and this modem leaves alot to be desired...some sites aren't accessible, the aspect ratio is all off, some images won't load, and it's just plain slow. Certain sites are inaccessible such as banking and stock sites particularly if they are encrypted. You can also use the modem to HotSync remotely but this is not something I need to do on a regular basis, but those who are usually away from their company or desktop PC will appreciate this feature. If you own a Palm V series PDA, you would be served well to buy a modem. You may not need it or use it all the time, but eventually you'll find yourself without your laptop or any way to access your email quickly and you'll come to appreciate the Palm V Modem!

A must-have for all Palm V owners,

I love gadgets. My Palm Vx became a constant companion and vital part of my wardrobe, and the modem follows close behind. On business trips or any other time I'm on the road, it has served me very well. The ability to keep up to date on e-mail, news, and HotSync stuff while on the road, combined with a pre-paid phone card, means that I'll never need to lug around a giant laptop! Woohoo! (...)

Using Palm V with modems,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: PalmOne V Modem (Office Product)
I have a Palm V and also a AOL account. Having an old 14.4 K external modem, I simply made a 9 to 25 pins gender change adapter, so that I could connect to a phone line directly from my hotsync cradle. I downloaded AOL 1.4 for Palm and I had nothing else to do except tapping on "sign on" to get online. If you want to fax, or browsing the web, you simply need to download the appropriate software from dedicated sites. So why should someone pay so much for a dedicated modem?Regards, Laurentiu GIURGEA |
