4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, July 3, 2009
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
Was choosing between this skin and a bunch of others(BSE, InvisibleShild) and this one turned out great. Probably has the least "orange peel" effect of all the skins...looks great...tough to apply, its gonna take a while to get it perfect. Luckily they include two so if you screw up you can always try again. If you are looking for a full body skin then this is probably the best skin out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT!, July 6, 2009

I was looking for a case for my phone, this stood out! I know what this film does for cars and i respect that. Install is a little tricky, but i only used 1 set (had to trim 2 small areas....thats it). It originally left a couple pin head size (water bubbles?!!??) but they have all and gone away. I do like being able to throw my phone in my pocket, on a table and not have to worry. There are 2 draw backs, 1 is that you have to work to put it on (patience really...) but its worth it, and 2 it that you cant use the black and orange case anymore (it grips that material). The second part.......well......you just put a cover on your phone so why do you need it!!

my 2 cents!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best of the lot., August 8, 2009
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
I originally had the zagg invisible shield for my palm pre and for another phone before that, gross. Thick, rubbery, orange peel look and turns yellow and grungy.

So I read everything there was to read on each of the different shields available for phones and this one sounded the best so I bought a 2 pack on sale for about $12.

I took soooo much care in applying it and it wasn't super easy, but it was worth the time it took to put it on. now my phone looks darling and is safe from scratches. I did not apply it on the back because I use the matte coated touchstone back (which I highly recommend). With the Phantom Skinz on front it feels fantastic, as close to bare as you can get. the only parts i can see are the pieces that go over the 4 edges, and it's really not noticable. The only part that is not smooth about it is that, instead of an orange peel look, there seem to be lines that seem to be produced maybe when peeling the shield off it's paper before placement, so i rec. being very careful with that part of the procedure, maybe get the item as wet as possible and try peeling it on in one motion, if that makes sense.

HIGHLY recommend this shield over all others.

Only thing I wanted to use the Phantom Skinz coverage for was the face of the phone. I don't want scratches on the touchscreen. Not too concerned about the back because I'm using the touchstone and the back is easily replaceable if something bad happened to it.

Here's how it went for me. I was a little surprised at the instructions. You need to have Johnson's Baby Wash. No idea why.

- Add small drop of baby wash to a cup of warm water
- Soak the skin (with backing paper) for 5-10 seconds in the cup of water
- Get your fingers wet
- Remove skin from the backing paper
- Soak it again (making sure not to let it stick to the cup or anything that isn't wet)
- Apply to the phone
- Use a credit-card like plastic tool to get out any bubbles etc.

While it's wet it is fairly easy to move it around and position it perfectly on the phone. Once positioned right, start smoothing it out with the tool to get rid of any bubbles or pockets of water.

I must say, from other reviews I was expecting it to take me an hour of messing around to get it right... wasn't the case though. I nailed it on the first time. Took about 10 minutes from start to finish and I have no bubbles. I also did it on a brand new Pre that just had the factory plastic screen removed, so it had never been touched before, had no dust, etc. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Anyway it was easy to apply the front (only part I'm using), you can't tell it's there, and it seems to be a well made product that will provide great protection to the face of my Pre. Only thing I am worried about is if the edges of it will start to collect dust or start peeling up over time... but for now I couldn't be happier with it. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rewarding and relatively easy to accomplish, August 3, 2009
By
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
After doing the usual homework and reading preceding reviews; I expected to settle in for a long (I thought a 90 minute session), rewarding, and tedious placement of this protective skin. In all I spent 15 minutes on the process. It is possible that my familiarity with this technology was a help, but I haven't applied this material onto a surface in many many years. So to make a long story short, be sure to keep the film wetted as per the instructions until is is properly placed. Be sure to completely power down the Palm Pre and remove the battery before you begin. You won't lose data if you do a proper power down first. As for film placement, the Palm has several excellent landmarks for getting the skin down and centered.
On the front use the lower center button and microphone for initial placement. Then while the film is still wetted adjust and center the film. On the back, use the palm logo for starters, then while the film is still wetted align the speaker and camera/flash then align the lower edge. I worked on a paper napkin to help wick excess wetness from the skin edges after initially soaking the skins.
Remember, once the film begins to dry it won't slide and align. Be sure to carefully squeegee the film from the centered outward to the edges. Do the edge and tabs last with your hands and fingers. The warmth of your hands helps to get the edges down dry and tacky.
Just imagine laying down a piece of Saran wrap. Same idea.
One last caution, the package I received was intact/sealed yet of the two skin kits; the second sheet only had a skin for the phone back, but the front skin was absent. I've notified the company.
Enjoy. It is very excellent once in place.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little learning curve... but well worth it., July 12, 2009

Very happy with the product. Couple of lessons I learned with installation. (1) Clean your Pre well. I used lint-free cloth and wiped it down to a mirror shine before installing. (2) Wash your hands well with soap and water. Really get all residual oils off hands. (3) Keep a small spray bottle with warm water. I went to Target and got a small travel spray bottle for 99 cents. (4) Patience!!!

You may have some small water bubbles initially, but after 2-3 days, they vanished. There is some "orange peel" effect but very mild. In fact, it is unnoticeable when you actually have the screen on. Great protection. Comes with two. Also a life-time replacement warranty. The price is great, and on the website itself, you get 50% off.

I know there is some debate over InvisibleShield vs Phantom Skinz vs others... truthfully I don't think there is a huge difference. If you like to do-it-yourself and save a few bucks, I'd go with this. Also, in my area, there is a InvisibleShield kiosk at the mall. Charges $30 but also will install themselves. If you just want the stupid thing on, and don't wanna fight the skin... maybe this is the best bet. FYI, Phantom Skinz apparently has kiosks in malls too. Cheers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great., August 1, 2009
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
First of all, don't believe all the "installation is too hard" stuff. It takes time and patience, but it really isn't hard. You have to wet the skin before you apply it to the phone, which made me really nervous since water damage isn't covered on my protection plan, but it worked out just fine. I suggest using a hair dryer to put the corners down - they are stubborn and won't stay in place if they are even mildly moist.

The touchscreen sensitivity is only very slightly affected. The Palm Pre is a finger print magnet, and this skin makes it inly slightly better at that. You will still need to wipe it clean before you show it off to your friends.

The biggest plus to this thing is that it comes with 2 sets of skins. Whenever this one starts looking raggedy I'll just rip it off and put on the other new skin. (I said installation was easy... I was able to spare both pieces. :P )

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressiv protection, firm grip, almost invisible, PITA to apply, October 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
This Phantom Skinz kit provides impressive protection considering that it is nearly invisible on the device. After applying the film, yes, there was some smudging visible; however, 24 hours later, all of it less a single small "pocket" was gone.

However, applying the skin is an exercise in patience. Yes, it really will take you between 30 minutes and an hour to apply the skin. And, even then, getting it around the edges of the device is tricky work. 24 hours later, I'm still wetting and tweaking the "tabs" (edges) to get them to sit quite right.

As another reviewer has stated, the skin provides the device more traction resulting in a firmer grip. I feel less likely that the Pre will shoot out of my hand to smash on the floor since I applied the skin.

And, yes, the material is impressive. It is scratch resistant as evidenced by much friction applied last night using the credit card-like "application device" supplied with the skin. It truly does seem to be a "self-healing" material.

Finally, to be entirely clear, I am in no way associated with Phantom Skinz or the product.

This skin is amazing. It took me about 45 minutes to install but looked great after itleaves the entire phone feeling like the texture of the keys. This gives you good grip. You can't even tell it is on ure phone so you can show off the sexy design of ure pre then drop it in ure pocket with no fears. Don't waste ure money on a bulky case from best buy just get this skin.

5.0 out of 5 stars scratch and smudge protection, January 18, 2010
By
Doreene (El Paso, tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Palm Pre Full Body Protection Kit by Phantom Skinz (Electronics)
I tried a best buy screen protector which did not look very nice on the palm pre--it "looked" there was a screen protector on the phone, which took away from the overall look of the phone. It did not offer the glossiness of the phantom skinz product. I ordered the phantom skinz from the website, received 2 sets and a lifetime guarantee. I recommend reading the website and ensuring you have some time to fully follow the instructions for applying the phantom skinz. Application of the product: it takes so long due to the time to apply the product because the skinz product has to be fully wet in order to adhere to the edges of the phone. The main phone face is easy as it is flat, but ensuring the edges do not curl up is the time-consuming part. Same for the back of the phone, the main back portion is easy, but ensuring the edges do not curl up and that they actually adhere to the corners is what is time-consuming. You have to hold the edges down until they stick and dry sufficiently; really no more than a few minutes. Once the product is on correctly and is dry (overnight is best) you cannot even tell that there is a screen protector on the palm pre. I overlapped two small edges on the corners (impatience) no more than 3 mm each...THAT was the only way anyone could tell that there was a screen protector on the palm pre.
The palm pre retains its glossy appeal, and though finger prints will still remain on the surface, you have merely to wipe them away with your shirt and no scratches will appear on the skinz surface--its great.
This product will keep your palm pre scratch free if you place it in your purse, your pocket, etc. The one and only downside is that I have found it difficult to find a case that will show the glossy look of the phone in addition to fitting over the phantom skinz. The phantom skinz product adds very little bulk to your phone, but enough bulk that you cannot just buy any two-piece snap-on case you want. The phantom skinz adds very very little bulk...maybe only 1 mm, but sufficient that you can only really put a silicone case on the phone...I am still searching for that one great case.
I wish I could find a phone case that would protect the pre from a fall (I recently dropped mine and lost the touchscreen ability, had the phone replaced..no problem with the insurance I purchased) and fit over the phantom skinz and somehow allow the glossy look of the phone to still be noticed. It may be asking for too much.
Overall, I recommend the phantom skinz product to keep smudges and scratches from your phone surface, but the phantom skinz will not protect the phone from a drop onto a hard surface such as the floor. Luckily, I have two phantom skinz sets..I needed the second set after the phone was replaced.
