Book Description

January 15, 1993
Something about the slow-burning sun and the easy lifestyle of Hollywood's notorious desert haven has nurtured a scrumptious history of cardinal sins, both public and private. From philanthropists to actors-in-waiting, Ray Mungo's Palm Springs Babylon is the compilation of these burning secrets, complete with damning photographic evidence and merciless documentation.

From Clara Bow's sexual appetite and voracious Jim Bakker's denials of promiscuity, to the rich veins of gossip to be mined from the Betty Ford Center, any gossipmonger or film buff will thrill to this lurid social history of Hollywood arcana. Witness zaftig Fatty Arbuckle stand trial for the grisly murder of a starlet; the egos of the powerful, the famous, and the purely eccentric locking horns; and the flamboyance and controversy, past and present, surrounding this florid and flourishing community.

Palm Springs Babylon is a secret history of this Hollywood playground at its best-its sleaziest, most corrupt, and most deliciously indecorous-in short, at its height of glamour.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Palm Springs the hidden, Palm Springs the demure, provides security and a veil for the misdeeds and private fantasies of the famous and rich. In Palm Springs they can party all weekend, let their hair down, easily obtain all drugs, keep their mistresses and boyfriends, go gay or bi- or pan-sexual, hide from the law or the press, feast on incomparable delicacies and enjoy priceless art treasures, and have it all without the glare of publicity, without the risk of exposure...Until now." --from Palm Springs Babylon

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun book, June 30, 2008
This review is from: Palm Springs Babylon: Sizzling Stories From The Desert Playground Of The Stars (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book, however, some folks may find it offensive in some areas (language and situations). I'm not sure how many of the stories are based on fact, but it's kind of like reading a People or US magazine that's based on Palm Springs history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Juicy, February 9, 2008
This review is from: Palm Springs Babylon: Sizzling Stories From The Desert Playground Of The Stars (Paperback)
The stars today have nothing on the celebrities from days gone by. The stuff that went on in Palm Springs in its hey day is pretty shocking and I am not easily shocked. This book is hard to put down.
