2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Left handed
The one that I have is the normal anodized aluminum, not the blue but I assume they are the same. I would love my case and give it five stars if only you could attached it on the right side so it opens up the opposite way. I am a lefty and it would be nice if someone thought of us for a change. Making the case reversible would be easy enough. If you try to reverse it,...

This review is from: PalmOne V Hard Case Special Edition (Metallic Blue) (Office Product)
Given all of the other reviews of this product in its basic oolor, I'll just focus my comments on the problems that a few users have found (largely, I believe, because they have failed to be careful with placing the machine in the case).

1) The case offers major protection, particularly for the glass screen. The safety afforded your investment more than makes up for the fact that the styling is less elegant than leather.

2) The springs will keep the case closed if you fully slide the Vx up the center rail and then press the top as you would the top of a stylus. This gets the Vx far enough into the case to get a perfect closing every time. Repeat as needed. The case is not intended to snap fully closed -- only to protect the machine, which it will do.

3) It's easy to install the machine on the left hand side of the case by reorienting the machine. This will make it fine for use by lefthanders.

4) I've found using this case with the HotSync cradle to be easy. Simply fold both the front and the back of the case to positions perpendicular to the Vx. Position the HotSync cradle either up on something or near the edge of your table so that the back flap of the cover has room to extend down. Now the machine will fit easily on the HotSync cradle. Furthermore, the Vx will be firmly on the cradle and is in no risk of falling.

5) It's unnecessary to HotSync every day to recharge the battery. If all you're doing is backup your data, a far better method is to simply use the infrared port on your Palm and your computer to effortlessly HotSync. This can be done by activating your infrared port on your computer and changing the setting on your Palm from Direct Serial to IR to a PC/Handheld.

The most important purpose of a case is, for me, to protect the machine. That it does, and at a reasonable price. However, take a look at its appearance which may not suit the style-conscious who can accept the greater risk of other cases.

4.0 out of 5 stars cool blue, but doesn't snap shut, October 23, 2000

Originally for several months, I used the basic cover that came with the Palm--the simple leather cover that just flapped over the front screen. I was comtemplating purchasing a slim leather case, until my backlight broke. Considering, I generally keep it in my bag with all my books and things I decided to go with the hard case.

+ Close to the size of the Palm.
I was somewhat reluctant to get the hard case because I thought that it would make the Palm bulkier(a reason I selected the Palm V is because of it's slimness and size), but I was suprised to find that it was very close to the size of the Palm. The Palm fits very snuggly in the hard case and didn't make it a bulkier or heavier to carry around. There is an additional protusion for the hinge, is about it.

- Does not snap shut.
It seems defective because it does not snap shut. So the case always is slightly agap especially if you put some cards into the little plastic holder in the back. It bothers me slightly because its seems to be a design issue that could be resolved rather simply. The case does stay closed and protects it (I've already dropped it a couple times).

+ Rich royal blue
The special edition is a very cool color (is not like in the pic--is more of a richer royal blue vs. aqua color). It is no longer available through Palm. So if you want the special edition hard care, order it through Amazon while its still in stock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slim and effective, August 25, 2000

When I bought my Palm a couple of weeks back, I figured I couldn't just live with the cheap cover that came with it. I wanted something that would protect my cherished investment. When I saw that Palm offered the blue hard case, I had to get it.

The blue case is stylish, durable, and slim. The item is made from a hard plastic with two blue anodized metal plates placed on the front and back. A plastic pin holds the Palm in place. You have to be careful, though. If you monkey around with it too much, it might break. If you're careful, it will last for a long time, just don't be too rough slipping it on and off.

If I was going to stop here, I would've given this item 4 stars. Here's why I'm giving this item 5 stars. I've dropped my Palm accidentally twice. Both times the Palm landed flush against a hard surface (A wood floor and concrete). Both times, my Palm was unscathed and worked perfectly thanks to the hard case. It's already paid for itself. I only feel bad now because I spend $40 on it, instead of waiting for Amazon to offer it for less than $30. It's well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool Case, February 10, 2001

I bought the Palm V Hard Case Special Metallic Blue Edition and I love it. I like that the color is unique and not a boring black or grey. It also protects the Palm V really while still keeping it nice and slim. I can easily slip it into my pockets with the case and not feel all bulky. I read the other reviews before I made my purchased and I have to admit. I was a bit concerned with the fact that the case does not fully close and people complaint about putting it in the cradle with the case. I noticed the case not fully closing as soon as I received it, but it really didn't bother me or interfere with anything. Also, I've had it for about a month now and its not that noticeable and I think it actually closes better now that it is broken in. As for the cradle. I have my cradle near the edge of the table so it was no big thing for me to slide the Palm V in the cradle with the case; it just needs to be at the edge so the case does not hit the table. If it wasn't easy for me to put it at the edge, it would be annoying. Overall I am very happy with the case, I had looked at other cases, but most of them added additional bulk which made it difficult to carry. This one is great - Great Look and does the job well - protection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice case, a pain to hotsync, May 4, 2001

I bought this case with my Palm and I'm delighted with it. It's strong (I know it since I dropped it twice and it survived). The colour is eye-catching, making it the envy of your co-workers and a target for every thief in the area.

I only have two complains:

1) The hinge-stops are all but durable... after two month use they are worn out and the cover barely stops on them... not much of a hassle but...

2) Using the cradle with this case it's a pain. You have to open it like a butterfly and leave the cradle on the edge of the table to place the palm without removing it from the case, just cumbersome... I opted for taking the palm out of the case every time I place it on the cradle but that's only twice a day for me, if you do it many time a day maybe you should look for another case.

5.0 out of 5 stars It serves it's purpose, February 15, 2001

After reading so many reviews about this hard case. I still decided to buy one, because my main objective was for the protection of my $400.00 investment. I travel a lot and the problem with the cradle does not apply to me. Because I use the Irda port to hot synch with my PowerBook G3 and I use the travel charger which is a simple plug and play. For what it was design to do, as a hard case (not as a card holder), it 's first rate. As for the "plastic", it's impact resistent polymer, like the ones found on palm III, notebook computers, car bumpers, hard case luggages, airplanes, space shuttles, space stations, etc.... get the message. One last thing, the special edition color is awesome!!! The color shown on the web is nothing compare to the real thing. Unfortunately, it could be a big "STEAL ME" sign, but I can live with it because it's different and it's clued to my hand. A solid 5 STARS!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Protects from wear and tear!, December 26, 2000

I purchased a Palm Vx off the internet and wanted to protect it because I use it outdoors year round. I got the metallic blue cover and it was shipped without additional shipping charges (thank you!). I really like it, but have made several observations: 1) need to open front and back and have it hang over the end of my desk for hot synch (not a big deal), 2) the cover does not close completely when laying on desk (again not a big deal, probably needs a stonger spring). I like the fact that it is light (a plus for plastic) and I like the fact that it is durable (I work outdoors and have dropped it several times). I think anyone who works outdoors or in manufacturing will need protection such as this case... It is light, hard, and not real expensive.... a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very stylish and durable case, December 14, 2000

I recently purchased this case for my Vx, and I must say that it was a very wise decision. It can be closed, but needs to be fit the right way. The case fits snugly over the palm, not adding any bulk, which is good. Its also very strong, I doubt it would break from being dropped or anything. Finally, the royal blue color is extremely eye-pleasing, much better than the original hard case. I implore anyone who needs a case for their palm v series to consider this, as I do not regret the purchase at all. And its not hard to have it close shut, just needs some adjusting.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good product at an OK price., November 23, 2000

I agree with Abycats, the case is fine the way it is. I had the leather case from Palm for about a year. I would keep a small stash of business cards and two credit cards in the case. When I had my Palm in my jacket pocket, the case would press against the bottom buttons, thus draining the battery.

This case works very well. I no longer can keep business cards in the case but I feel that my Palm is better protected and the battery lasts much longer. The color of the case is fine. I figured, why not get the millenium edition for the same price as the regular edition. The same case is ... at any other location.

As for the HotSync problem, why can't you just take the Palm out of the case to HotSync?

The only reason I did not give this case 5 stars is that I believe that the price is still a little too high for the materials that were used.
